OET Grade C+

OET was previously graded A, B, C, D, E. However, C+ has recently been introduced to provide clarity
between C and C+ grades.

We recognised the need to identify people who have the equivalent of IELTS 6.5, and previously grade C
spanned the ability range of IELTS 5.5 – 6.5.

Based on OET benchmarking studies to correlate OET with IELTS scores, the OET grade of C has now
been divided into C+ (IELTS 6.5) and C (IELTS 5.5-6.0) as shown in the table below.

For the time being the grade of C+ will only be used by NMC in the UK and will apply in the specific situation
detailed below.

NMC requirements from 1 November 2017

All non-UK trained nurses and midwives applying for registration with the NMC will need to achieve OET
Grade B in all four sub-tests: listening, reading, writing and speaking.

NMC will accept OET test results taken from February 2016 onwards:
i. from one test administration, or

ii. from a maximum of two test administrations taken in a six-month period, only if:

• A minimum Grade of B is achieved in all four sub-tests across the two test administrations, and
• The candidate is tested in all four sub-tests in each administration, and
• No grade in any sub-test is below C+, and
• Both tests were taken from February 2016 onwards.

OET tests taken between February 2016 and November 2017
Statements of Results for tests taken between February 2016 and November 2017 will not show C+
because a distinction between C and C+ was not reported before this time.

Candidates who took OET between February 2016 and November 2017 and meet the NMC requirements
can contact OET to confirm whether they achieved C or C+ and obtain a new Statement of Results at no
extra charge by submitting a request form.
