The Summer Treat

Educational research has made it very clear that parents, who are actively involved in
their childrens' learning at home and help the children in becoming more successful
learners.

Summer pack is designed to help the child reinforce key concepts, process and solidify new
information. This summer pack will help your child to enhance learning and creativity
through fun and enjoyable activities.

Tips for Parents to help theIr chIld during Summer Break

Create a special place and time: A place for you and your child to work together that is
free from distraction to help your child see the value of this special “learning time”.

Be prepared: Have materials such as pencils, pens, crayons, scissors, glue and paper
readily available.

Brain storming: Take ideas from your child.

Plan ahead: If your child becomes frustrated or bored, suggest that he/she moves to
another page or work at another time.

Motivating your child: Give your child plenty of praise and encouragement. Most of all
have fun while you work and learn together. In addition to the three R's, children need
the four A's: Attention, Appreciation, Affection and Acceptance.

Don't hover but stay close: Keep in mind that it's their homework, not yours, but remain
available in case you are needed.

Limit the media exposure: Turn off the TV, ipad and tablets when your child do
homework. Child shouldn't watch TV more than 3 hours in a day as watching more TV is
not good for eyes.

Reading to your child: Try holding D-E-A-R times at your house. "DEAR" stands
for "Drop Everything and Read." During DEAR time, everyone in the family sits
down for some uninterrupted reading time.
Picture book One Word Book Non-Fiction
Little by little Big Bug What is inside me
Hurry up & Slow down Yellow Ball Things that sting
Little apple goot. Up, Down & Around Perfect pot
Fairy Tales Traditional Readers
Little red riding hood Lots of nuts
Goldilocks & three bear Ginger bread
The princess & pea. Big carrot
Oxford reading tree series.
Building self –Esteem: Have children make a "book" about themselves, with
their own illustrations and wording. "A Book About Me" is a great way to help
your child see themselves as "somebody."

Building Responsibility: Try a simple cardboard box to help make your children
responsible for school belongings. Have them choose a place for the box,
perhaps near the door or in their room. Every afternoon, their first task should
be to place all belongings in the box. When homework is finished, it goes in the
box, too. In the morning, the box is the last stop before heading out the door.

EncouragIng ChIldren's Language Skills

Preschoolers love to ask questions – Answer them, have conversations. With your
child. Ask your own questions like, “What do you see?”“Do you think that rock is
heavy?” etc.
Let them explore and investigate the surroundings and ask questions related to
the topic or environment.
Talk about what your child is doing and what you're doing. Ask questions that
extend their thinking. “What kind of picture are you drawing?” “You're doing a
good job of cleaning up.”
Practice taking turns in conversations. “What did you do at the park today?”
“Wow… do you like to go high on the swings? I like going really high.”
Read with your child and involve him/her with the reading. Ask your child to
guess what will happen next? Ask him/her why a character did something in the
story.
Show your child that writing is useful. Have them help you write a letter
ordering something, asking a question, etc. Then show them the results of your
letter.

Put specific times on your calendar each week when you will spend time with your
children. During that time, focus your love and attention on your child.

Use car time to talk with your children. There's no phone or television to
interfere. No one can get up and leave. And kids know they really have your ear.

Put specific times on your calendar each week when you will spend time with your
children. During that time, focus your love and attention on your child.

A pencil
Scissors
Glue, tape or a stapler
Crayons, paint or markers
Googly eyes (optional)
A pipe cleaner

57
International School System
Date:

On a piece of dark construction paper, draw a butterfly's body (draw a

long oval plus a smaller circle at one end).

Glue or staple the handprint tracings to the body, three on each

side. The fingers should point outwards.

Fold a pipe cleaner in half. Curl the ends a bit or wad them into balls.
The folded pipe cleaner will be the butterfly's antennae.

Tape or staple the bent part of the pipe cleaner to the back side
of the butterfly's head.
Either draw eyes on the butterfly's head or glue on googly eyes.
