CRITICAL ANALYSIS Paula
Three black women who worked in a NASA facility and made significant contributions
to the space program are the subject of the film Hidden Figures. The three ladies are shown to
have a strong sense of self-efficacy and the capacity to adjust to challenging situations. However,
there is also a sense that their lack of access to resources, particularly money and education,
hampered their sense of self-efficacy and capacity to adapt. This is only one of the reasons it's
crucial for people to comprehend what it was like for non-white males who were employed by
The movie also emphasizes the significance of scientific research in assisting our nation
in achieving its goals, as well as the significance of it for those outsides of science who wished to
contribute their ideas through research or engineering initiatives. The movie also shows how
many people tried to claim credit for scientific breakthroughs made by others, even though it
would have been much more difficult for them to make those breakthroughs without access to
resources like computers or other sophisticated machinery. And the film shows how these three
women overcome gender stereotypes to excel in their careers despite harassment from coworkers
who failed to recognize or value their contributions to engineering research outside of the
Although it has several problems, the movie itself offers an excellent look at the
difficulties black women faced in the 1960s. The first problem I have with Hidden Figures is that
it concentrates too much on the personal lives of the key characters rather than their professional
careers. When they discuss their families or personal lives, they are doing this, which makes
those scenes seem less significant than they would if they were only discussing their jobs. The
ladies are not given enough time to share their own stories, which is the second problem I have
with Hidden Figures. The movie depicts them doing what they do best, putting their all into their
profession, but frequently omits how long they stayed there or how many people they managed
at that time. It appears that not enough time was spent on these matters since they preferred to
return to more significant issues, such as romance (which is by no means a bad thing). The other
female characters in this movie are also competing for jobs at NASA, with varying degrees of
success.
We are reminded of our own struggles—and how much we can accomplish when we set
our minds to something—as I watch these women conquer challenges that would have been
insurmountable for many others. For today's youth who may be dealing with troubles in their
personal lives or mental health issues, this message is especially crucial. When faced with
obstacles that appear insurmountable or unfair, it can be simple for us to lose hope in our
situation and feel helpless. However, as long as there is hope for progress, there is also hope for
victory!
