Activity
( 5 minutes) 1. Drill: Give practice exercises on reading money in symbols through ₱ 500. Use flashcards
as snappily as possible.

2. Review: Using show me boards, write the money inn symbol as shown in each strip of
paper. Then, read the amount of money you wrote.

3. Motivation : Call one boy and one girl in front while the rest of the class observe. Show
real money of different denominations. Suppose your father will give your allowance for
one week.

The boy receives one 100-peso bill and one 50-peso bill. The girl receives two 50-peso bill,
two 20-peso bills and one 10-peso coin

Ask: How much did the girl receive?


How much did the boy receive?

Activity
( 15 minutes) 1. In this situation, who received more allowance, the boy or the girl?
How much did the boy receive? What about the girl?
How did you compare the amounts they received? ( Start from the digits with the biggest
place value then add the amounts.)
2. Have pupils work in groups. Give each group two sets of paper bills and /or coins. Have
them tell the value of each set. Then ask, which among each set has the bigger value? You
may use play money.

What relation symbols did we use in comparing money? When do we use >? What about
the symbol<? the symbol =?
How do we compare the values of money?
Why is it important to learn to compare values of Philippine coins and bills? On what
occasion do we use this skill?
4. Let the pupils work in pairs. Show an item with their corresponding amounts.
A bag costs ₱ 499.00 an umbrella costs ₱ 95.50
A pair of shoes costs ₱ 350.00 eyeglasses costs ₱ 199.95
Which item is the cheapest?
Which item is the most expensive?
Which is cheaper, the bag or the umbrella?

Analysis Group the class into four. Give each group 3 pairs of envelope containing bills and coins.
( 5 minutes) (Use play money.
 Ask them to count and compare the two amounts of money in each pair. Let them
write the facts in number sentences.
example: ₱ 79.25>₱ 65.05
 Ask each group to report their work in the class.

Ask:
 How do you find the activity?
 Is it easy for you to compare money?
Abstraction  What symbols do we use to show the relation of the value of money?
( 10 minutes)  How do we compare values of different denomination of bills and coins?
- We should know the amount of money before comparing them.
- We start comparing the digits on the biggest place value to the least place value.
- Write the value of each kind of bills and coins, then add.
Application Situation; A customer handed a PhP 1 000 bill
( 6 minutes) List all possible bills and coins to answer the problem given.
1.Use bills and coins to make change for a customer who buys an umbrella
Worth PhP 589.
2. Use coins and bills to make change for a customer who buys a bag worth PhP 728,75.
Write the amount of the given money in you notebook.
Assessment Ask pupils to compare the denominations of bills and coins using >,<, or =.
