inclusion, child abuse prevention, and perceived intersections of these

key efforts.

As local and national conversations continue to evolve, it is critical that Ys can speak directly to perceived intersections of
transgender inclusion and child abuse prevention, help clear up misunderstandings, clarify facts, and discuss a way forward
towards ensuring inclusion and safety for all. In any talking points on policies and procedures ensure alignment with all local,

STATEMENTS ON COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY, EQUITY & INCLUSION

The [NAME] YMCA is an inclusive organization open to all. The Y is made up of people of all ages, from every walk of
life, working side-by-side to strengthen communities. Together, we work to ensure that everyone regardless of ability,
age, cultural background, ethnicity, faith, gender, gender identity, ideology, income, national origin, race or sexual
orientation, has the opportunity to reach their full potential with dignity. The Y believes that, in a diverse world, we are
stronger when we are inclusive, when our doors are open to all, and when everyone has the opportunity to learn,
grow, and thrive.

WHAT IS YOUR POLICY ON TRANSGENDER PEOPLE IN LOCKER ROOMS?

In keeping with our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, and to ensuring everyone feels both welcome and safe at the
Y, we offer all individuals the use of facility spaces, including locker rooms, that align with that individual’s gender identity.

WHAT IS YOUR RESPONSE TO PEOPLE WHO RAISE CONCERNS ABOUT THE SAFETY OF
CHILDREN IN LOCKER ROOMS WITH TRANSGENDER INDIVIDUALS?
Child safety is a separate issue entirely. At the [NAME] YMCA, the safety and well-being of children in our care always has been -
and always will be - a top priority. We have a series of measures in place designed to protect all children. To learn more about
the Y’s work in child protection, visit ymca.org.

WHAT ABOUT THE POSIBILITY OF A YOUNG CHILD BEING EXPOSED IN A LOCKER ROOM
TO A NAKED TRANSGENDER INDIVIDUAL WITH GENITALIA OF THE OPPOSITE SEX?
If a policy is already in place:
This has not been an issue. Our experience is that, like most people, transgender individuals value privacy, are discreet, and
demonstrate care in their actions.

If preparing to enact a policy:

We have spoken to YMCAs that have similar policies in place, and this has not been an issue. The same is true of entire states
with legal protections for transgender people, according to research. Experience shows that, like most people, transgender
individuals value privacy, are discreet, and demonstrate care in their actions.

THIS IS A CHALLENGING ISSUE FOR MANY PEOPLE. WHAT ROLE DO YOU BELIEVE THE Y
CAN PLAY IN ADDRESSING IT?
The Y understands that this may be challenging and unfamiliar for some. Because the Y is a place where communities come
together, we believe we have an opportunity to facilitate dialogue to advance inclusion of people representing all dimensions of
diversity - including gender identity. In keeping with our core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility, we believe it
is important to consider diverse perspectives, talk through concerns and beliefs, and build empathy for one another.
