DISCUSSION

Uses of Rock-Forming Minerals

From the list of common rock-forming minerals below, choose (1) one and give at least
(1) one use of the mineral.

1. QUARTZ

is a hard, crystalline mineral composed of silica (silicon dioxide). The atoms are linked
in a continuous framework of SiO4 silicon-oxygen tetrahedra, with each oxygen being
shared between two tetrahedra, giving an overall chemical formula of SiO2.

2. CALCITE

is a rock forming mineral with a chemical formula of CaCO3. Calcite can be turned into
limestone and marble; this is used in high end structures. Marbles can be turned into
floor tiles and wall tiles but some of the middle class houses right now, they use marble
tiles in the restroom and in the kitchen especially in the sink and bar bay or kitchen
island. This can be used in construction material, abrasive, agricultural soil treatment,
construction aggregate, pigment, pharmaceutical and more. It has more uses than
almost any other mineral. Some geologists consider it to be a "ubiquitous mineral" - one
that is found everywhere.

3. CLAY MINERALS

are excellent as clarifiers, absorption and adsorption materials. They are used in many
industrial applications such as paper, paint, petroleum, ceramic, cement, adhesive,
asphalt, and food and health-care industry due to their versatility, abundance, and low
cost.
