OBJECTIVES:
K: State Boyle’s Law;
D. Objectives U: Explain the relationship between volume and pressure at constant
temperature of a gas; and
D: Solve problems applying Boyle’s law.
II. CONTENT
A. Topic BOYLE’S LAW
 Boyle’s law is a gas law which states that the pressure exerted by a gas (of a
given mass, kept at a constant temperature) is inversely proportional to the
volume occupied by it. In other words, the pressure and volume of a gas are
B. Key Concepts
inversely proportional to each other as long as the temperature and the
quantity of gas are kept constant. Boyle’s law was put forward by the Anglo-
Irish chemist Robert Boyle in the year 1662.

B. Complete each statement below by filling in the blanks with the correct words
found from the puzzle.
Note: 1-word answers 5 other blanks.

1. Gases, like any other states of __________, consist of very tiny ________________, each
of which has mass that are very far from each other.
2. Gas ___________ move rapidly in straight lines, travel constantly in __________
directions.
3. Gases diffuse rapidly that allows two or more gases to __________ readily when
combined. Because of the wide spaces between gas ____________, the forces of
attraction between them are negligible.
4. _______________ is conserved in elastic collision of gas ___________. Thus, particles of
gases that collide each other or with the walls of its container do not lose kinetic
energy, instead, it is only transferred to the lower-energy particle and continue to
move.
5. The average ______________ energy of gas ___________ is directly proportional to the
absolute temperature of the gas.
Prerequisites: Students should be familiar with
 Pressure - continuous physical force exerted on or against an object by
something in contact with it. The SI unit for pressure is pascals (Pa).
Other units of pressure include torr, barr, atm, etc.
 Volume - the amount of space that a substance or object occupies, or that is
ENGAGE enclosed within a container. The SI unit of volume is the cubic meter (m3),
which is a derived unit. Liter (L) is a special name for the cubic decimeter
(dm3).
 Temperature - the degree or intensity of heat present in a substance or object.
The SI unit of temperature as per the International System of Units
is Kelvin which is represented by the symbol K.
Boyle’s Law
The relationship between the volume and pressure of gases at constant
temperature was first stated by Robert Boyle during the 16 th century. He finally
concluded that the volume of a fixed amount of gas is inversely proportional to its
pressure at constant temperature.
He proposed Boyle’s Law, which states that the volume of a given mass of gas
EXPLORE
held at constant temperature is inversely proportional to its pressure.
Gas particles have a very weak intermolecular force of attraction hence they
move as far as possible from each other. They have the tendency to occupy all the
spaces they are contained in. If the pressure is increased, the volume will be decreased
forcing the gas particles to move closer to one another. The volume of a gas is inversely
proportional to its pressure, if the temperature and amount of a gas are held constant.
