1. Define communication, communications and media.
2. Define media and information literacy as composite concept.
3. Share in class your media habits, lifestyles, and preferences.

COMMUNICATION AND THE MEDIA


1. Communication – is the process of sharing ideas and opinions about issues, people,
events, and places between or among persons through various channels with the intent to
gain common understanding. Ito ay isang “interactive” process, meaning, palitan ng mga
meanings about text, images, people’s actions and behavior. Ito ay dumadaan through
verbal (sa salita lamang) at non-verbal (kilos lamang) means of relaying information or
through the use of media such as print, broadcast, electronic, or new media.
2. Communications – the technical means of communication or the channel through which
the messages is conveyed. Mobile phones and computers are part of communications.
3. Media – the channels through which we communicate.
TWO CLASSIFICATIONS OF MEDIA
a. Traditional Media – includes mass media such as newspapers, radio, and
television.
b. New Media – includes computers, mobile phones, and other digital gadgets.
4. Communication Media – mass media and ICT combined.
5. Information – the message conveyed by a sender to its recipient through various
channels.
6. Multimedia – the combination of different forms of media in one platform.
Example: Audiobook - is a recording of a book or other work being read out loud.
Combination of text and audio media.

THE ROLES OF TODAY’S MEDIA AND INFORMATION IN SOCIETY


THREE MAJOR FUNCTIONS OF COMMUNICATION MEDIA IN THE PHILIPPINES.
1. To inform – Umaasa ang mga Pilipino sa mass media and internet para makakuha ng
mga impormasyon tungkol sa bansa, sa gobyerno, mga programa at polisiya nito, mga
batas, tao, mga kaganapan, lugar, lagay ng panahon, sports at iba pa.
2. To entertain – Mahilig ang mga Pilipino manuod ng mga “drama” at “situational
comedies” (sitcoms) on televisions and internet. Nakikinig tayo sa paborito nating musika
sa radyo through podcast, MP3 Players, at sa internet. Ang iba ay naglalaro ng video
games gamit ang tablets at laptop computers.
3. To educate – Gumagamit ng iba’t-ibang media for education gaya ng mga educational
shows on television and radio, lectures videos sa internet, and podcasts.

MILLENIALS AS PRODUCERS AND CONSUMERS OF MEDIA AND INFORMATION

bookmarking techniques and data folders or cloud storage such as Google Drive and
Dropbox.
2. Wise consumers – kailangan mong maunawaan ang mga messages ng mabuti mula sa
mga media and internet outlets at kung paano ito gagamitin sa paggawa ng mga
mahalagang desisyon. Halimbawa ay ang dapat bilhin or kung sino ang dapat iboto sa
mga eleksyon at iba pa.
3. Responsible producers – irespeto ang privacy at kultura ng ibang tao, sundin ang
“netiquette” kapag online at kilalanin ang sources ng iyong information kapag gagamitin
mo ito sa iyong research or academic work.
4. Active participants – Kapag alam mo ang mga information na kailangan mo, pwede ka na
makiisa sa mga social and civic events. Tandaan: huwag mag-participate sa isang bagay
na hindi mo nalalaman ng lubusan.

DEFINITION OF MIL
“Media and Information Literacy is defined as a set of competencies that empowers
citizens to access, retrieve, understand, evaluate and use, create as well as share
information and media content in all formats, using various tools in critical, ethical, and
effective way, in order to participate and engage in personal, professional and societal
activities. (UNESCO 2013, 29)”
