LEARNING EPISODE 1

The School Environment

ANALYZE

How do the school campus and the classroom in particular impact the learning of the
students going to school? What are your conclusions?

School campus and classrooms is a second teacher for the learners. They spends a
lot of time sitting in the classroom. This is the place where they gain knowledge
through studying. So, it is very important that it should be covered in an
environment that is conducive to learning because it has a great impact in the
learning of students. The learners will have issues if the environment is slightly
disorganized and things don't seem to be in their proper places. Also this can affect
the teachers way of teaching because they cannot give the maximum effectiveness
of instruction , so the students won't learn anything or they will only receive a
minimal amount of learning.

How does this relate to your knowledge of child and adolescent development/How
does this relate to your knowledge of facilitating learning?

Based from what we learn about child and adolescent development, students learn
more readily if they are exposed to a friendly environment that is free from noise
and distractions. If the teacher always keeps learners motivated and employs a
range of fresh learning resources, they could easily pick things up. So I came up with
the realization that in order to facilitate learning, I should ensure that when carrying
out my duties as a teacher, I must use the methods and strategies that are most
successful for teaching and fit to the needs of each learners for me to give the best
knowledge that they can get from school.

REFLECT

1. Would you like to teach in the school environment you just observed? Why?
Why not?
Yes. Even though we did not yet deployed in Rapu-Rapu Central Elementary
School to conduct observation, I have a positive feeling that I will like to
teach in the said school because I already experience to become a student in
that school when I was in elementary and I still remember the school
environment and also my teachers, their strategy and way of teaching, so I
know that one day I can be like them that teaches the new generations to be
a better learner. Also, the RRCES is now different, totally different compare
from the time when I was still in elementary. There are lot of improvements,
new facilities and buildings, and other stuff that can contribute more to the
students learning.

2. What kind of school campus is conducive to learning?

I think a school campus can be considered as conducive to learning if it has
the facilities and other important educational things that can benefit the
students learning, as well as additional training grounds for the students to
put their knowledge and abilities to the test. In addition to this, the campus
is well-organized and free of anything that can hinder the pupils' ability to
learn.

3. What kind of classroom is conducive to learning?

Since the majority of learning takes place in the classroom, it is very
important that it must be conducive to learning. A conducive learning
environment consists of several important factors in addition to having the
proper school furniture supplies. It should create a space in which students
can freely express their ideas to their classmates and teachers, while also
feeling comfortable exploring various aspects of different subjects and
themselves. It must be an environment that encourages students to learn at
their own pace, style, and despite differences. It is the responsibility of a
teacher to create an environment in which every student can not only learn
but also have fun while respecting everyone around him. Learning extends
beyond the classroom, but what is learned inside is just as important.

4. In the future, how can you accomplish your answer in number 3?

To accomplish my answer in number 3 of course I need to pursue first my
study for me to become a real teacher someday. And if that happens I will
definitely apply all the learnings that I gain from my 4 years in college,
especially to all of my instructors. I will also apply the experience that I will
get if we already conduct an observation and do our practice teaching. If I
combine all this important knowledge to facilitate learning then I will
accomplish my answer in number 3. But since learning is a continuous
process, even though I already became a teacher, I will still keep on
improving my self and to my teaching strategies so that it will fit on the
learners needs.

5. Write your additional learnings and insights here.

I will surely learn more if we already conduct an observation in elementary
school and I know that I will enjoy this part, so I am now very excited this
following weeks because we can now experience and understand what really
happens inside the school campus and classrooms and how can we manage
and facilitate learning in the best and effective way.

OBSERVE, ANALYZE, REFLECT

Activity 1.2 Observing bulletin board displays

Note: This activity can only be answered if we already conduct an observation in Elementary
School.

Based on your suggestions, make your board display lay-out. You may present your output
through any of these:
 A hand-made drawing or layout
 An electronic (computer) drawing or layout
 A collage

My Board Display Lay-out

ANALYZE
What do you think was the purpose of the board display?
The purpose of board display is to get students involved, excited, and working
together, thereby maximizing learning and personal skills. Furthermore, board
displays are an excellent learning tool for children who are visual learners because
they allow them to visualize exactly what is being told to them.

Did the board display design reflect the likes/interests of its target audience? Why?
Why not?
Yes, because they are in the right place where the learners can see them, the
displays has a key messages that are clear and easy to understand, it is colorful and
catchy in the eyes and it truly give the learners a very informative materials.

Was the language used clear and simple for the target audience to understand. Why?
Why not?
Yes, it only uses key words or messages that learners can easily understand, the
letters are in enough sizes that children can read it easily even in a far distance.

Was the board display effective? Why? Why not?

Yes. This board display is effective because learners get the information in a way that
they easily understand the message that the material gives.

What suggestions can you make?

I propose that board displays include some subjects that, in addition to the usual
information that is only meant for educational purposes, also inform readers.
Something relating to the topic being discussed on the board, such as trivia and
quotes. Readers may find this beautiful and interesting.

Based on your suggestions, propose an enhanced version of the display board. Use the

REFLECT

1. Name at least five skills that a teacher should have to be able to come up with
effective board displays. Elaborate on why each skill is needed.
Editing Skills, Creativity, Visual Skills, Communication Skills and Organization
Skills

Editing Skills
The teacher must be aware of when to begin condensing a lengthy
presentation. Keep the content there and reduce padding and other
extraneous elements. At this stage, being able to cut down on repetitive
language and lengthy displays would be really helpful.

Creativity
The teacher needs to be creative in order to catch the eyes of the learners so
that they give time to look and read what’s on the board displays.
Visual Skills
The teacher should be able to properly visualize the presentation. It's crucial
to have the ability to both see something and write it down in that way. In
this way, teachers have been compared to artists or interior designers: they
can visualize their goals and know how to get there.

Communication Skills
Teachers must have a good communication skills because certain students
will be more open to information presented in one method than others, so
teachers should be able to deliver their facts to the class using the
visualization process. Also they must be able to make the data interesting for
their students. To create an effective whole, teachers should be able to mix
written content with visual elements.

Organization Skills
The teacher must collect, compare, arrange, and group the display's content
into a cohesive, significant, and manageable form to organize it. Lesson
plans should include visual displays rather than treating them as a stand-
alone activity. If students are seeing a presentation, they should cultivate a
variety of skills.

2. Which of the skills you named in #1 do you already have? Recall your past
experiences in making board display. How do you practice these skills?
I think I already have all the skills that I have stated because since I love arts, I
often do editing, organizing and creating stuff even in school works and
activities starting from elementary until now in college I always practice these
skills because I believe that this is very helpful in the course that I choose and
it really is. Through these skills I manage to create and finish my activities in
a simple yet creative way.

3. Which skills do you still need to develop? What concrete steps will you take on
how you can improve on or acquire these skills?
For the skills that I think I need to develop more is the communication skills
because honestly I’m a bit shy person. I can talk to others but In a large
crowd I have a feeling that I cannot talk to them specially in front of many
people. So I need to cope this weakness because the course that I take is
education and we are a future educator, we must face large crowds, talk to
them and help young learners to be properly educated.

My Personal Illustration of an Effective School Environment

For me an Effective School Environment must have a setting that is an essential part of a
student's life. Schools should offer children a secure setting where they can flourish
intellectually, emotionally, and behaviorally while also building relationships with others. Each
and every learner needs a safe setting or environment with structure, respect, stability,
limitations, and boundaries. There are elements in the educational setting that help kids
perform better. These things include making close friends at school, thinking of instructors as
supportive and caring, thinking of punishment as effective and fair, taking part in
extracurricular activities, feeling like a member of the school, and feeling a sense of belonging.
When students believe that the adults in the school care about them as persons and their
learning, they feel more integrated into their surroundings.
