Extended essay - Reflections on planning and progress form


Candidate: This form is to be completed by the candidate during the course and completion of their EE. This document records
reflections on your planning and progress, and the nature of your discussions with your supervisor. You must undertake three
formal reflection sessions with your supervisor: The first formal reflection session should focus on your initial ideas and how
you plan to undertake your research; the interim reflection session is once a significant amount of your research has been
completed, and the final session will be in the form of a viva voce once you have completed and handed in your EE. This
document acts as a record in supporting the authenticity of your work. The three reflections combined must amount to no more
than 500 words.

The completion of this form is a mandatory requirement of the EE. It must be submitted together with the completed
EE for assessment under Criterion E. As per the ‘Protocols for completing and submitting the Reflections on
planning and progress form’ section of the EE guide, a mark of 0 will be awarded by the examiner for criterion E if
the RPPF is blank or the comments are written in a language other than that of the accompanying essay.

Supervisor: You must have three reflection sessions with each candidate, one early on in the process, an interim meeting and
then the final viva voce. Other check-in sessions are permitted but do not need to be recorded on this sheet. After each
reflection session candidates must record their reflections and as the supervisor you must indicate the month that the reflection
session took place, the candidate’s year of DP study at that time and initial this form.

First reflection session


Candidate comments:

My research is oriented culture and character as dictated by the short story collection entitled, "Rokat Tase." I had
started to look at short story and analyse language as well as images in order to draw conclusions and compare the
views of how the moral values in the old culture of the Madurese are no longer reliable with character values for the
current Indonesian generation because they are considered not to be progressive and will cause setbacks for
Indonesia's young generation. Before I went any further, my mentor said my topic was too wide and suggested I
stick to some chapter in that short story. This seems a better plan and moderate my sense to build significant
meaning in my analysis

Interim reflection
Candidate comments:

I have chosen my selection of short stories, requested the Emirati ones, and conducted additional study. Although
the scope of my original concepts has been marginally altered, they have nonetheless been considerably more
narrowly focused. I currently possess the RQ "Sejauh mana Dogma Kultur Masyarakat Madura dalam Buku
Kumpulan Cerpen Rokat Tase' Karya Muna Masyari Mengonsolidasikan Kodifikasi Karakter Penerusnya guna
Menciptakan Dunia Berdefinit pada Prosais Pengarangnya,” How did the dogma of culture of the Madura people In
our discussion, my supervisor kindly reminded me that each chapter counts as "text" for Category 3 essays, so I
shouldn't merely rely on the Rokat Tase and the Arketipe of Madura Cultural Moral as sources. I need to check the
Language and literature syllabus guide before I go any further, and make further changes to make my ideas more
focused.

Final reflection - Viva voce


Candidate comments:

I believe that purchasing Muna Masyari's short tale collection played a significant role in my EE process. It appeared
that the Madurese community's actual conflicts start with a sense of dissatisfaction over unique demands placed on a
relationship. Fundamentally, this conflict results from a perception of the benefit of the object of the discontent and
frustration over unique expectations placed on the connection. Then, issues might also arise as a result of a growing
drive to obtain something and a constant need to be justified. Sadly, it was pretty difficult to convince people that the
Madura Dogma was not appropriate for usage in the current progressive era. I had to cut out the whole idea of
working with some source related to the archetype of Madura Culture.

For me, the beginning and finish of the research and writing process were the highlights. I originally had some really
ambitious plans for my Extended Essay, but I had to leave out a lot of them because I could not find the sources. One
of my low times was having to entirely rethink ideas because I was afraid I would lose all of my original ideas in the
process and would have to move forward with something less fascinating to me personally and less relevant. The next
high moment, though, came when I was almost finished with the process and discovered a method to maintain some
of my ideas while weeding out the ones I could not realistically implement. By mixing them together with some fresh
ideas, I think I came out with something just as interesting!

The EE process proved fruitful, as it offered candidates a unique and invaluable opportunity to study adolescent
mental illness through the use of language from a psychological perspective that was unfamiliar to them. From this
experience, students realize that explaining the definition of each term used in the chosen work is very important in
research.

In addition, candidates learn how to avoid bias in analyzing data. Some of the obstacles they had to face during their
research were starting the process of selecting works and collecting data. However, once started, and after finding
some good resources, things went smoothly.

Through composing an Extended Essay, students learn time management, writing, and analysis of their individual
essays. Students also learn to compile or arrange ideas using language that is clear and easy for readers to
understand. Candidates appreciate how the personal nature of the essay motivates them to want to write and
research.
