LION

Lion is a large, powerfully built cat (family Felidae) that is second in size only to the tiger.
Lions are the only cats that live in groups, which are called prides—though there is one
population of solitary lions.

Lions are carnivores, which means they are animals that only eat meat. Some of the types of prey
they catch include birds, hares, turtles, mice, lizards, wild hogs, wild dogs, antelopes, cheetahs,
buffaloes, leopards, crocodiles, baby elephants, rhinoceros, hippopotamuses, and even tall
giraffes. In the wild, there are two formally recognised lion subspecies. The African lion
(Panthera leo leo) is found in Africa, south of the Sahara desert. The Asiatic lion (Panthera leo
persica) exists in one small population around Gir Forest National Park in western India.

The proverbial “king of beasts,” the lion has been one of the best-known wild animals since
earliest times. Lions are most active at night and live in a variety of habitats but prefer grassland,
savanna, dense scrub, and open woodland.

Lions can be found in jungles, they are much more commonly located in other habitats. African
lions are the only species of lions known to live in both the jungle and the savanna. They are
pretty adaptable and can even be found in deep forests and open woodlands.

Lions hunt either alone or in prides. In collaborative hunts, it is usually the lioness who initiates
the kill. Lions stalk their prey and, when close enough, attempt a short charge on their prey,
trying either to pounce on their target or knock it over.

Lions don't like to run long distances and typically choose prey that is easy to catch. That's why
they prefer weak or wounded animals to chase so they can catch them without expending much
energy. So, horses can outrun a lion so long as they have a warning.

Lions fangs are very strong, because lions have a powerful bite–up to 1,000 PSI. They don't use
all this force to crush bones though; they use it specifically to hold on to and strangle prey.
Also like a pet cat, lions have retractable claws. This means that their sharp claws can be
stretched out and then drawn back inside again under the fur where they are hidden. They can
grow up to 38 millimetres in length and are very strong and sharp.

A lion can hear prey from a mile away. A lion has incredible hearing, helped by swivelling ears
that adjust to the direction that sound is coming from.

Only about 20,000 wild lions remain in Africa. We have no estimates of their former numbers,
but it is likely that there were at least many hundreds of thousands before European settlers
arrived.

All cats, from our own pet moggies to lions and tigers, belong to the same family of animals; the
Felidae family. These animals first began to evolve 25 million years ago and have become the
most highly-developed carnivorous hunters of all the mammals.

The purpose of the mane is thought to protect the lion in territorial fights. Although lions are
known for their mane, not all males have one. Male lions are distinguished by their mane, which
they use to attract females, and they roar to protect their territory or call upon members of their
pride.

Male lions are much larger than females. The length of a female is typically between 4.6 and 5.7
feet, while the length of a male is between 5.6 and 8.3 feet. Their tail length is 27 to 41 inches.
Female lions weigh 270 to 400 pounds, while males weigh 330 to 570 pounds.

Lion prey includes zebras, buffaloes, deer and other grassland animals. These animals are often
larger and faster than an individual lion. Lions are fierce predators that often stalk their prey
before attacking.

Both males and females initiate mating. When lions mate, the male lion mounts the female and
bites her neck to make her passive. After successfully mating, cubs gestate for an average of 110
days. A female can give birth to up to four cubs at one time.
