Module : Network Technology

Index Number : 00130996

Tutorials aim to discuss matters arising from lectures, work not covered in lectures, essays
or other tasks that have been set or some aspect of the readings. Tutorials are generally
led by a tutor. As such, the following work is to be discussed and explored either physically
or via online means.

a) Why do we need networks?

It allows us to share and transfer information between two or more computers using
cable or modem.

b) Explain the three types of network types.

 LAN (Local Area Network)

It is a computer network that covers a small area. LAN connects computers and
workstations in office or home. LAN covers a local area of 1km. Data transmission
rate is 10/100Mbps. Uses IEEE 802 standard.
 MAN (Metropolitan Area Network)
It is an interconnection of network in a city.
MAN supports data and voice transmission. The best example for MAN is the
television cable network in cities. MAN covers an area of 2 to 100km. MAN uses IEEE
802 standard.

 WAN (Wide Area Network)

Page 1
WAN spans wide geographical area such as a state or country, which includes
multiple computers or LANs. It connects computers through public networks, like
telephone system, satellite link or leased line. The best example of WAN is internet. It
covers large geographical area more than 100km.

c) Compare and contrast the LAN, MAN, and WAN.

a) Explain the main difference between categories of network topologies.

There are two categorize of network topologies. They are physical and logical
topologies. Physical topology is a placement of various nodes and logical topology is a
deal with the data flow in the network.

Page 2
b) What is the difference between star topology and extended star topology?

In star topology every node is connected to a central node called a hub or switch. In
extend star topology we can connect two or more-star topologies with the help of a
repeater.

c) What is the main role of token in ring topology?

Sending and receiving data takes place with the help of a token.

d) State a closed loop topology.

e) Explain the advantages and disadvantages of mesh topology.

Advantages Disadvantages
Fault tolerant Issues with broadcasting messages
reliable Expensive and impractical for large
networks
