Skeletal Muscles Part: 4

Anatomy of the Anterior Antebrachium (forearm)
1. Skeletal Muscle System
Use Chapter 11 in your textbook to complete the muscle table. You are responsible for identifying,
naming, and knowing the origin(s), insertion(s), and major action(s) of the following muscles.

Anterior Forearm Superficial Layer Anterior Forearm Intermediate Layer

44. Flexor digitorum superficialis
40. Flexor carpi ulnaris
Anterior Forearm Deep Layer
41. Palmaris longus 45. Flexor digitorum profundus

42. Flexor carpi radialis 46. Flexor pollicis longus

43. Pronator teres 47. Pronator quadratus

2. Cardiovascular System. Use chapter 20 to identify the following on the specimens and models.
All of these structures are paired. Include the word “right” or “left” when naming vessels and nerves.

Arteries
Ulnar artery and Radial artery

Deep veins
Ulnar vein and Radial vein

Superficial veins
Basilic vein, Cephalic vein, Median cubital vein and Median vein

3. Nervous System. Use chapter 14 to identify the following peripheral nerves.

Musculocutaneous nerve
Median nerve
Ulnar nerve
Radial nerve

The ulnar nerve innervates flexor carpi ulnaris and flexor digitorum profundus (in part) and
intrinsic hand muscles. It also innervates the skin of the medial hand and of digit 5 and parts of
digits 3 and 4.

The median nerve innervates most of the muscles of the anterior forearm muscle compartment
(pronator teres, flexor carpi ulnaris, palmaris longus, flexor digitorum superficialis, flexor
digitorum profundus (in part), flexor pollicis longus, and pronator quadratus) as well as intrinsic
hand muscles. It also innervates the skin of the palm and parts of digits 1-4.

Anatomy of the Posterior Antebrachium (forearm)
1. Skeletal Muscle System
Use chapter 11 in your textbook to complete the muscle table. You are responsible for identifying,
naming, and knowing the origin(s), insertion(s), and major action(s) of the following muscles.

Posterior Forearm Lateral – Superficial Layer

48. Extensor carpi radialis longus Posterior Forearm Deep Layer

49. Extensor carpi radialis brevis 53. Abductor pollicis longus

Posterior Forearm Superficial Layer 54. Extensor pollicis brevis

50. Extensor digitorum communis 55. Extensor pollicis longus

51. Extensor digiti minimi 56. Extensor indicis

52. Extensor carpi ulnaris 57. Supinator

2. Nervous System. Use chapter 14 to identify the following peripheral nerves.

Radial nerve (easily viewed in the proximal posterior arm between long and lateral heads of triceps brachii)

The radial nerve innervates the: brachioradialis, extensor carpi radialis longus and brevis, extensor carpi
ulnaris, extensor digitorum, extensor digiti minimi, abductor pollicis longus, extensor pollicis longus and
brevis, and extensor indicis.

What is the name of the muscle compartment that houses most of these muscles? Extensor compartment of
forearm.

The radial nerve also innervates the skin of the dorsum of the hand and parts of digits 1-4.
