linear equation in one variable, we find a value of the variable that will satisfy the
equation. The value that we will get will be our solution to the equation. In this

WHAT’S IN
PPREPREV
Let’s take a look at this problem.
The sum of twice a number and three times another number is 24. What are
the two numbers?

Since we are looking for two numbers in the given problem. We can use two
variables to present these numbers. Let x be the first number and let y be the
second number and this problem can be translated to 2x + y = 24. This is a linear
equation in two variables.

Activity 1: Fill me up
In solving the problem above find the second number (y) by substituting the
first number (x) that will satisfy the conditions.

First no. (x) 2 4 6 8 10

Second no. (y)

After completing the table you can plot the ordered pairs.
Let’s name the ordered pairs as
Point A (2, )
Point B (4, )
Point C (6, )
Point D (8, )
Point E (10, )

The graph of a linear equation is a line.

Linear equations in two variables

If A, B, and C are real numbers (and if A and B are not both equal to 0) then
Ax + By = C is called a linear equation in two variables. (The “two variables” are the
x and the y.)
The numbers A and B are called the coefficients of the equation Ax + By = C.
The number C is called the constant of the equation Ax + By = C.

Examples.
10x - 3y = 5 and - 2x - 4y = 7 are linear equations in two variables.

Solutions of equations

A solution of a linear equation in two variables Ax + By = C is a specific point

in Cartesian Plane such that when the x-coordinate of the point is multiplied by A,
and the y-coordinate of the point is multiplied by B, and those two numbers are
added together, the answer equal to C. (There are always infinitely many solutions
to a linear equation in two variables.)

Examples.
Let’s look at the equation 2x - 3y = 7. Notice that x = 5 and y = 1 is a point in
Cartesian plane that is a solution of this equation because we can let x = 5 and y =
1 in the equation 2x - 3y = 7 and then by substitution we have 2(5) - 3(1) = 10 - 3 =
7.

The point x = 8 and y = 3 is also a solution of the equation 2x - 3y = 7 since

2(8) - 3(3) = 16 - 9 = 7.

The point x = 4 and y = 6 is not a solution of the equation 2x - 3y = 7 because

2(4) - 3(6) = 8 - 18 = -10, and -10 is not equal to 7.

The general form of a linear equation in two variables is Ax + By = C where A,

B and C are constants. This general form can be written in terms of x:

Ax + By = C

By = -Ax + C add Ax to both sides

y = -Ax/B + C/B divide both sides of B

y = - Ax/B + C/B

let m be equal to – A/B and b be equal to C/B. Thus we have y = mx + b. this is

the slope-intercept form of a linear equation where m and b are constants.

WHAT’S MORE
Let’s begin your individual activities. Are you ready?
Activity 2: It fits me!
Write (GF) if the equation is in standard form and (SI) if it is in slope-intercept
form.
1. -7x + 2y = 14
2. x – 3y = 3
3. y = 2/3 x – ½
4. y = 4x + 1
5. y = -x + 7
6. 3x + 2y = 6
7. y = -2x – 13
8. y = ½ x + 4
9. y = 2/3 x – ½
10. -6x + 4 = 11

Now that you can differentiate general form to slope-intercept form, let’s see
if you can identify the coefficient, slope and the y-intercept in the given equation.
Let’s do this!
Activity 3: Find me!
Determine the value of the coefficient of x and y in the given equation.
1. 3x + 2y = 6
2. x – 3y = 3
3. -7x + 2y = 14
4. 5x + 10y = 3
5. -6x + 4 = 11
Determine the slope (m) and y-intercept (b) in the given equation.
6. y = 4x + 1
7. y = -x + 7
8. y = -2x – 13
9. y = ½ x + 4
10. y = 2/3 x – ½

Now that you could determine the coefficient of the x and y in the equation
that is in general form and determine the slope and the intercept in the equation in
the form of slope-intercept form. Now, let’s see if you can still answer the next
activity.
Let’s go!
Activity 4: Solution!
Tell whether if the coefficient of x and y are the solution of the given equation by
subsituting the values of the coefficient. Write S if it is a solution and NS if not.
1. x = 2 ; y = 4 x+y=6
2. x = - 4 ; y = 1 2x + y = - 7
3. x = 1 ; y = 7 x-y=-6
4. x = 2 ; y = 5 x + 4y = 10
5. x = -1 ; y = 4 3x + 4y = 13

Great job! It’s time for you to do the math.

THE DOLBEAR’S LAW

During Jay’s childhood days, he enjoyed sleeping athis grandparents’
place on weekends. His grandparents lived in the farm where at night, it
was so quiet that the only sound he would hear were those crickets
chirping. The chirping of crickets is often dubbed and played in a radio
drama to help listeners imagine that the scene is taking place at night in
a rural setting. But did you know that some species of crickets serve as
natural thermometers? Snowy tree crickets are sometimes called
“thermometer crickets” because the rate at which they chirp can be used
to estimate the air temperature. An American physicist named Amos
Dolbear expressed this relationship,in 1897, using the equation
𝑁
𝑇 = 4 + 40, where N is the number of chirps per minute and T is the
approximate temperature in degrees Fahrenheit. This equation that
came to be known as Dolbear’s Law is an example of a linear equation in
two variables, and whose graph is a straight line.

Let’s Analyze:
1. Who introduced the Dolbear’s Law? ___________________________________
2. What creatures were referred to as “thermometer crickets”? ____________
3. Describe the graph of a linear equation in two variables. _______________
