Learning Area: Science
DETAILED LESSON Quarter: 4th Quarter
PLAN Session: M-F 9:40-10:40 & 1:00-2:00

A. Content Standards: The learners should demonstrate an understanding of the species as

being further classified into a hierarchical taxonomic system

B. Performance Standards:
The learners shall be able to report (e.g., through a travelogue) on the
activities that communities engage in to protect and conserve
endangered and economically important species

C. Learning Competencies
The learners shall be able to classify organisms using the hierarchical
taxonomic system (S8LT-IVh-20)

I. OBJECTIVES At the end of the session, students must be able to:

A. identify the different species of Kingdom Protista and their
characteristics;
B. describe the negative effect of eating clams that are affected with
red tide; and
C. construct a Frayer Model about the species under Kingdom
Protista

IV. PROCEDURES TEACHER’S ACTIVITY STUDENT’S ACTIVITY

A. Preparatory Activities
a. Prayer
Everybody, please stand. May I
request Nestor to lead the
prayer? Yes, Ma’am.
Everyone let us pray.

Good morning, class! Good morning, Ma’am!

Good morning, classmates!
Mabuhay!

You may now take your seats. Thank you, Ma’am.

How are you today? We’re great!
That’s good to know.

b. Checking of
Attendance
I will check your attendance
according to your seat plan.

c. Checking of
Assignment
Please pass your assignments.

d. Setting of Standards
Okay. Before we will start our
lesson this morning, and to have
a productive discussion, please
all stand, put your right hand in
your chest and read aloud with
sincerity our house rules. Go! HOUSE RULES

1. I will participate and

cooperate in the class
discussion;
2. I will listen when my
teacher speaks;
3. I will use my intelligence
to convey ideas;
4. I will keep myself silent
and observant during
classes hours; and,
5. I will not do unnecessary
actions that can disturb
my classmate and the
whole class.

Very good! I hope that you will

obey our house rules ‘til the end
of the period. Yes, Ma’am!

A. Reviewing Previous
Lesson or Presenting A. Review
the New Lesson
Last meeting, we discussed about
Bacteria Domain: Kingdom
Eubacteria. Right? Yes, Ma’am!
Okay. We discussed that bacteria
varied in shapes. Now, what are
the different shapes of bacteria?
Yes, Paul? Ma’am, we have cocci, bacilli and
spirilla.

Yes, you are right, Paul!

Thank you.

Now, cocci are also arranged

differently. What are the different
arrangement of cocci?
Yes, Charlo?
Ma’am, if they are in pairs, it is
known as diplococcus, if it is in
chains, it is known as
streptococcus, and
staphylococcus if they come in
Exactly, Charlo! clusters.

Since you’ve fully understand our

topic last meeting, let’s give
ourselves a round of applause.
(Round of Applause)

B. Motivation

Now, I have a seaweed here

locally known as “guso”.

Processing Questions:
1. Where can we find this
type of seaweed?
2. Have you already tasted
it?
3. Do you like it?

B. Establishing the
Purpose for the Lesson Our topic for tonight is about the
Kingdom Protista.
And for this session, please read
aloud our lesson objectives.
A. identify the different species
of Kingdom Protista and their
characteristics;
B. describe the negative effect
of eating clams that are affected
with red tide; and
C. construct a Frayer Model
about the species under
C. Presenting Examples Unlocking of Difficulties Kingdom Protista
/Instances of the New
Lesson Before we proceed to our
discussion this morning, let us
have first define the uncommon
words that we’re going to meet
along in our discussion. Read!

1. Phototrophs – protists that

obtain their energy by
manufacturing their own
food.
2. Heterotrophs – protists
that obtain their energy by
feeding on other
organisms.
3. Sporozoan – protists that
are nonmotile, form
spores and parasitic.
D. Discussing New
Concepts and
Practicing New Skills #1 Okay, this morning let us
construct a Frayer Model
of the species under
Kingdom Protista.

A frayer model is a
graphic organizer that
builds student vocabulary
by generating examples
and non-examples, giving
characteristics and
defining the word.

Are we all set?

Yes, Ma’am.

(Student’s Activity)

E. Discussing New Let Us Know (Discussion)

Concepts and
Practicing New Skills #2 The Frayer Model shows the
definition, characteristics,
examples and non-examples of
the Kingdom Protista.
The algae, dinoflagellates and
Euglenoids belongs to the
phototrophs group which
manufactures their own food.
The heterotrophs group consists
of radiolarians, foraminiferans,
amoeba, paramecium, didinium,
vorticella, slime, water molds &
flagellates that feed on other
organisms to survive. Pyrodinium
bahamense var, compressum is a
species of dinoflagellates that
causes “red tide”. During red tide,
people should not eat clams and
mussels in the affected areas
because these organisms might
have fed on dinoflagellates which
produce toxins and cause
paralysis of the diaphragm that
can lead to death. The sporozoan
group has this parasitic example,
the plasmodium.

Any clarifications, questions so

far?

None, Ma’am!
And now, let us have another
F. Developing Mastery activity. I will pick a letter inside
the box and whosever family
name that starts with the same
letter I picked will stand up and
answers the given question. Am I
clear, class?

And it’s a letter “A”. Yes, Ma’am!

Okay. The question for you Only Almonte, Ma’am!

Almonte will be, what species of
dinoflagellates causes red tide?

Pyrodinium bahamense var,

Very good, Almonte. Take your compressum, Ma’am.
seat.

And the next letter is “B”. We

have Bragaiz and Belmonte,
right? Please stand first
Belmonte. This question’s for you.
What are the 3 groups of Protists
in terms of the method on how
they obtain their energy?

Phototrophs, heterotrophs and

Correct. Please seat down, Sporozoan, Ma’am.
Belmonte.

Bragaiz, what are the types of

algae?

Green, Golden, brown and Red

Very good, Bragaiz. Please seat Algae Ma’am.
down.

The next letter is, letter “C”. And

we have Cutamora.
Cutamora, what do you call a
group of protists that fed on
another organisms?

Heterotrophs, Ma’am!
You’re right, Cutamora. We have
radiolarians, foraminiferans,
amoeba, paramecium, didinium,
vorticella, slime, water molds and
flagellates.

G. Finding Practical Processing Questions:

Application of Concepts
and Skills in Daily 1. Describe some sample
Living commercial products with
the help of species under
Kingdom Protista?

Now, how do you define Protists?

H. Making Generalization Yes, Angelica?
and Abstractions about
the Lesson Ma’am, protists are eukaryotic
organisms that is not an animal,
Very good, Angelica. Have a plant or fungus.
seat.
Thank you, Ma’am.

What are the three classified

groups of protists?
Yes, Cristina?
Ma’am, we have phototrophs,
heterotrophs and sporozoan.
You are right, Cristina. Take your
seat.

Are there still any questions?

Clarifications?
None, Ma’am.

I. Evaluating Learning Since you’ve fully understand our

topic for today, please get a ½
sheet of paper and we will have
an identification type of quiz.

1. What specie causes red

tides in the ocean?
Pyrodinium bahamense var,
compressum
2. What are the three
classified groups of
Kingdom Protista?
Phototrophs, heterotrophs and

3. Give the 3 species under
the group of Phototrophs.
Algae, dinoflagellates and
euglinoids.
4. Give the specie under
sporozoan group.
