Steam drum overview:

 Steam drum - is the most important component of a boiler because it is

a separator for steam water mixture, and its function is to collect the
steam produced and also provide a space where steam can separate
from boiler water.
 is generated in the water tubes of a boiler and at the saturation point
steam it boils and form to bubbles and then suddenly it will separate to
the liquid, the easiest way to understand the steam drum is that it is a
storage place where steam produced in the boiler water.
 is located above the water drum.
 desired pressure ranging 3300 kpa, needed to be monitored and
pressure must not drop to 3300 kpa and exceed to 3400 Kpa.
 Steam drum level alarms- high and low alarm monitoring is provided
for the steam drum level signal selected control

Steam Drum Controller

The steam drum water level controls, regulate the feed water supply, to
maintain a near constant level of water in the boiler steam drum under varying
load conditions. The control is further complicated by fluctuation in the main
steam flow, plus swell and shrink of steam drum water level during load
changes.

Elements Definition
LT204A LHS Steam Drum Level Transmitter
LT204B RHS Steam Drum Level Transmitter
ES204 Steam Drum Level Transmitter
LY204 Steam drum Level Transmitter Signal Averager
FT201 Feed Water Flow Transmitter
LC204 Steam Drum Level Controller
LC201 Feed Water Flow Controller
LCV201 Feed Water Regulating Valve(B138)

RHS AND LHS Steam Drum Level Transmitter

 Steam Drum Level

1. Both critical and difficult measurement to make. Control of the water
level in the drum must be precise.
2. - A water level that is too high can result in water carryover into the
steam piping.
3. A level that is too low can expose the down comers, preventing the
water in the drum from cooling the furnace tubes possibly damaging
them.
 Steam drum level Transmitter selection
1. Two level Transmitters monitor the steam drum water level, one
on the RHS and one on LHS.
2. The outputs from the two transmitters are input to the steam drum
level transmitter Averager LY204, which averages the signals
from the LHS and RHS transmitter.
3. The output from the signal average, RHS and LHS steam drum
level, is directed to the steam drum level selector ES204, the
selector permits LHS and RHS steam drum level to be selected
as input to the steam drum level controller LC204.
4. The output from the Signal Averager, RHS Steam Drum Level
and LHS Steam Drum Level, is directed to the Steam Drum Level
Selector ES04. The selector permits the LHS, RHS or the
average Steam Drum level signal to be selected as input to the
Steam Drum Level Controller LC204.
5. If the water remains low for 30 secs, the boiler is tripped.
Modes of Operation The Steam
- Drum Level and Feed Water Flow Controllers have two modes of
control, manual and auto(cascade).

Steam Drum Level Controller

- Manual when selected allows the Steam Drum Level Controller output
to be manually set by the operator from the Controller.
- Auto when selected, will initiate auto control of the Steam Drum Level
Controller output, to controller setpoint.

Feed Water Flow Controller

- Manual when selected, allows the Feed Water Regulating Valveposition
to be manually set by the operator from the controller.
- Auto (cascade) when selected, will cause the Feed Water Flow
Controller to control feed water flow to set point from Steam Drum Level
Controller.

Note: The Feed Water Flow Controller setpoint cannot be adjusted by the
operator in this mode of operation.

Steam Drum Level Transmitter Failure

-The Steam Drum Level Controller input is monitored for faulty operation and
the following is initiated for a failure condition:

i) LHS Steam Drum Level Transmitter LT204A selected for service.

 Failure of LHS transmitter is indicated on the controller. A low input
failure turns off the Steam Drum level > Low interlock. This will generate
a Low Steam Drum level MFT trip of the Oil Burner and a direct MCC
trip of Bagasse Feeders. A high input failure activates the Drum Level
High Alarm.

ii) RHS Steam Drum Level Transmitter LT204B selected for service.
 Failure of RHS transmitter is indicated on the controller. A lowinput
failure turns off the Steam Drum level > Low interlock. This will generate
a Low Steam Drum level MFT trip of the Oil Burner and a direct MCC
trip of Bagasse Feeders. A high input failure activates the Drum Level
High Alarm.
iii) Average of LHS and RHS transmitters selected for service.
 Failure of the LHS or RHS transmitter. The controller input will be the
average of the good drum level signal and the failed drum level signal
(0% for low input 100% forhigh input). The Drum Level High Alarm or
Drum Level Low Alarm may be triggered.

WARNING: In this mode the average signal does not provide a correct level
signal and the Steam Drum level selector must be selected to the healthy level
transmitter immediately to ensure correct and safe operation of boiler.
 On low input failure of both the LHS and the RHS transmitters, the
failure is indicated on the controller and the Steam Drum Level > Low
interlock is turned off. This will generate a Low Steam Drum Level MFT
trip of the Oil Burners and a direct MCC trip of Bagasse Feeders.
 On high input failure of both the LHS and RHS transmitters, the failure
will be indicated on the controller and the Drum Level High Alarm will be
raised.
 On low input failure of one transmitter and high input failure of theother
the input to the controller will be 50% and no alarms will be raised.

WARNING: Under these conditions no Drum Level Control is available and

the boiler should be shut down.

Steam Drum Level Alarms

-High and Low alarm monitoring is provided for the Steam Drum level signal
selected for control.

MFT Steam Drum Level Extra Low

 When the corrected Steam Drum water level falls below the Extra Low
level, a Boiler Fuel Trip will be initiated, to trip Oil Burner and Bagasse
feeder.
