GRAMMAR
Relative clauses (who/that/which/whose/where/whom)

Relative clauses are clauses starting with the relative pronouns -who, that, which, whose,
where,when,whom. They are most often used to define or identify the noun that precedes them. Relative
clauses allow us to provide additional information without having to start a new sentence. In English,
there are two types of relative clauses: defining relative clauses, used without commas,and give essential
information and non-defining clauses which are set off by commas and give extra information.

Examples:
Defining relative clauses:
 This is the new car that I bought yesterday.
 The ring which he bought for her is beautiful.
 The book that you see on the table cost me twenty pounds.
Non-defining clauses:
 The school, where I studied, is in the centre of the city.
 The textbooks, which the students like, have lots of helpful examples.
 John, who plays football, is always busy at weekends

Task 1. Choose the correct relative pronoun.
1. The children are collecting the leaves…have fallen from the trees.
2. The boy…watch had stopped did not know that he was late.
3. You should not drive a car…brakes don`t work!
4. The man…is getting on the bus now is our history teacher.
5. The medicine…the doctor gave me had no effect at all.

Subject and Object clauses.


Relative pronouns can be either a subject or an object in relative clauses. When a relative
pronoun is a subject, it is followed by a verb. When it is an object, it is followed by a noun or
a pronoun.
Examples:
 That is the car that I was looking for.
 We will stay at a hotel which my friend has recommended to us.
 Nobody knows who stole the money.
 I have forgotten where I put my bag.
 These are friends whom I spend a lot of time with.

Task 2. Put the appropriate relative pronoun:


1. Do you know the man … talked to me?
2. We will stay at a hotel … is next to the beach.
3. That is the film … is very exciting.
4. The peaches … you bought in the shop are tasty.
5. Do you know the man… I talked to?
Omission of the relative pronoun. Omission of the relative pronoun is possible if a pronoun
functions as the object of a main clause

Examples:
 The hunter (who) my sister saw in the woods was caught by the police.
 The train (which) she was about to take was late.
 This is the terminal (that) I told you about.
 Did you find the money(which) you lost?
 An ambulance came to take the climber (whom) I helped

Task 3. Fill in the gaps with the most appropriate relative pronouns if it is necessary.
1. The film…I saw two days ago was very interesting.

VOCABULARY
comedy — a play characterized by its humorous or satirical tone and its depiction of amusing
people or incidents, in which the characters ultimately triumph over adversity. “Shakespeare's comedies”.
conviction — a firmly held belief or opinion. “she takes pride in stating her political convictions”.
pilgrimage — a devotional practice consisting of a prolonged journey, often undertaken on foot or on
horseback, toward a specific destination of significance. It is an inherently transient experience, removing
the participant from his or her home environment and identity.
passion — strong and barely controllable emotion. “a man of impetuous passion”.
playwright — a person who writes plays.
rare — unusually good or remarkable. “he plays with rare sensitivity”.
to represent — be entitled or appointed to act or speak for (someone), especially in an official capacity.
“for purposes of litigation, an infant can and must be represented by an adult”.
tragedy — a play dealing with tragic events and having an unhappy ending, especially one concerning
the downfall of the main character. “Shakespeare's tragedies”.
wonderland — a land or place full of wonderful things. “London was a wonderland of historical sites,
museums, theatres, shops, and entertainment”.
ancient – belonging to the very distant past and no longer in existence. “the ancient civilizations of the
Mediterranean”.

British Literature
Great Britain gave the world a lot of talented people. Many famous writers and poets were born
and lived in Great Britain.
One of the best known English playwrights was William Shakespeare. He draw ideas for his
tragedies and comedies from the history of England and ancient Rome. Many experts consider
Shakespeare the greatest writer and the greatest playwright in English language. William Shakespeare
wrote 37 plays which may be divided into: comedies (such as “A Midsummer Night's Dream”), tragedies
(such as “Hamlet”, “Othello”, “King Lear”, “Macbeth”) and historical plays (such as “Richard II”,
“Henry V”, “Julius Caesar”, “Antony and Cleopatra”).
Lord George Gordon Byron. His free-spirited life style combined with his rare poetic gift makes
him one of the most famous figures of the Romantic Era. His famous works such as “Stanzas to
Augusta”, “The Prisoner of Chillon”, “Childe Harold's Pilgrimage”, “Manfred” draw readers into the
passion, humors and conviction of a poet whose life and work truly embodied the Romantic spirit.
Lewis Carroll became famous when he published “Alice's Adventures in Wonderland”.
Robert Burns represents the generation of Romantic writers. In his poems he described with love
and understanding the simple life he knew. Among his well-known poems are “Halloween”, “The Jolly
Beggars”, “To a Mouse”.
Sir Walter Scott wrote the first examples of historical novel.
While reading task: Answer the questions. If you don't know the answer, make a suggestion,
saying “I suppose, perhaps, may be”.

WRITING
What is an essay?
An essay is a group of paragraphs written about a single topic and a central main idea. It must have at
least three paragraphs, but a five-paragraph essay is a common length for academic writing.
The structure of an essay.
The three main parts of an essay: the introduction, the main body, the conclusion.
The first paragraph (the introduction) explains the topic with general ideas. It also has a thesis statement,
the sentence that gives the main idea.
The main body are the paragraphs that explain and support the thesis statement. There must be one or
more paragraphs in the main body.
The conclusion is the last paragraph of an essay. It summarizes or restate the thesis.
How to format an essay.
1.Use double spacing (leave a blank line between each line of writing).
2.Leave 2.5 cm of space on the sides, and the top and bottom of the page.
3. If you type your essay, start the each line of each paragraph with five spaces(one
tab). If you write by hand, indent about 2 cm.
4. Put the title of your essay at the top of the first page in the centre.
What is thesis statement?
The thesis statement is the sentence that tells the main idea of the whole essay. It can be compared to a
topic sentence, which gives the main idea of a paragraph. It usually comes at or near the end of the
introductory paragraph.

Task 1. In this introductory paragraph find and underline the thesis statement.
Art is at the core of each and every one of us. Because of this fact, I believe art’s main purpose is to
connect us all through evoking our emotions, question our common beliefs and appeal to our senses. Art
is a way to communicate to each other the society in which we live today.
