WHAT IF I BLEND THE ART AND CULTURE OF DELHI WITH THAT OF SIKKIM

A retreat for kings and queens, an inspiration for writers and thinkers. A landmark that finds space
on the silver screen, an icon that finds itself in the history books. From first glances to second looks
Delhi can’t help being the centre of attraction. Delhi is love, Delhi is haste, Delhi is serene, Delhi is
chaos – It is the yang to its own yin. While Sikkim on the other hand is a land of monasteries – a
complete paradise on Earth. With breath-taking views of the Himalayas and imposing Pagoda-style
houses. With nature trails that captivate and forays into Garhwali culinary secrets, Sikkim is that
perfect holiday in the hills.

The history of India is a history of waves of migrants coming and settling one after another in
different parts of the country.

“SAR ZAMIN-E-HIND PAR AQWAM-E-ALAM KE FIRAQUE

KAFILE BASTE GAYE, HINDOSTAN BANTA GAYA…”
~India in the words of a renowned poet Firaque Gorakhpuri

The history of Delhi goes back to Mahabharta times where it was known as Indraprastha, the capital
city of Pandavas. With a lot of historic association and Delhi being the capital of India has a very rich
cultural heritage which can be best evidenced in its monuments and ethnic composition. According
to the reports submitted by the Archaeological Survey of India, there are 1200 heritage buildings and
175 monuments as national heritage sites in Delhi. Hinduism is the main religion followed by the
people of Delhi. Apart from Hinduism, the other commonly practiced religions include Islam,
Sikhism, and Christianity. Factors like multi-ethnic and multi-cultural bureaucracy has paved way for
a cosmopolitan lifestyle of the people of Delhi. Delhiites take pride in falling in the 5 th most
populated urban area of the world. Delhi is a dominant center for ivory carving. The people of Delhi
are great patrons of Kundan and Meenakari Jewellery. Kite making and Tazia are another speciality
of their art and culture. Blended with modern advancements, Delhi is the modern-day city of Troy.
The amalgamation of all religion and spiritual hubs of different faiths coexisting together in peace is
the testament of the unity in diversity. The history of Sikkim goes back to the pre-historic times
where the state was occupied by three-tribes namely Naong, Chang, and the Mon. Today, Sikkim has
three major groups of tribal people namely the Lepcha who migrated from Tibet, the Bhutias who
are descendants of Buddhists from Tibet, and the Nepalese from Nepal who are the descendants of
Hindus. The people of Sikkim have a rich cultural heritage with a homogenous blend of different
communities of people living. Apart from the traditional Sikkimese language and several other tribal
languages the people of Sikkim also speak Hindi and English thus making the state a multi-lingual
state. The mask dance is very famous in the region and is performed by monks in a temple during
religious festivals. Sikkimese being nature worshippers believed in bone faith based on the spirits,
good and bad for their prayer to the spirits associated with nature like mountains, rivers, and
forests. The people of Sikkim who follow the Mahayana form of Buddhism celebrate the festival of
Saga Dawa which is suppose to be very auspicious. As a matter of offering thanks to Mount
Kanchendzonga, the festival of Phang Lhanbsol is celebrated with great pomp and enthusiasm. The
Sikkimese are known for their traditional sport of archery which is played especially after the
harvest. People of Sikkim connect themselves directly to the soil of the ground where their main
occupation is agriculture. Sikkim, indeed, helps us gain an understanding of the natural world and
what’s in it is not just a source of great curiosity but also of great fulfilment. In the lap of nature lies
great bounties and the true magnificence of life.

If one is the day, another is night, if one is black, another is white, if one is dark, another is light, if
one is west another is east. Delhi and Sikkim are two opposite sides of one coin. Their art and culture
are quite different from one another but if blended together will complement each other. Just as the
coin can’t exist without its two sides similarity, the world can’t exist without these so-called
opposites because they provide us with a spectrum to exist in, that stretches between two extremes
or polarities to include every variation of light and shade that we sense or experience in between.
