    REVERSE LOGISTICS

    GROUP TERM PAPER

    In recent decades, there has been increasing interest in Reverse Logistics (RL), particularly with
    the attention towards returns management in light of growing focus on the potential of closed loop
    supply chains in enabling economic, environmental and social sustainability. From an economic
    stand point, some firms are implementing an RL system to decrease the cost burden associated
    with liberal return policies and to create added value for products that are at of their end of life
    cycle. Some of the indirect reasons are motivated by increased socio-environmental awareness that
    compel supply chains to commit towards socially and environmentally sustainable or responsible
    behavior. In several countries, especially in developed economies, laws and regulations on
    environmental protection and social welfare hold firms accountable for product recovery and
    disposal methods, especially concerning greenhouse gas emissions and the generation of waste by
    companies. With the numerous reasons that are influencing supply chains to operate an RL system,
    the strategic value of Reverse Logistics in the decision making process of supply chains cannot be
    understated.

    Write a paper using course material and wider reading (review existing scholarly literature)
    to CRITICALLY discuss the strategic importance/value of Reverse Logistics in enabling
    supply chains to achieve sustainability. In your paper, you are REQUIRED to address the
    following;
    Guidelines;

    • The economic, social and environmental reasons influencing supply chains to


    implement RL systems.
    • Models or strategies for optimizing RL systems.
    • The role of internal and external stakeholders in developing RL systems.
    • The strategic importance/value of RL and returns management in firm’s
    decision making processes and attainment of sustainability.
    • Barriers limiting closed loop supply chains from attaining sustainability.
