DISCUSSION 2
In this module, you are going
to learn about the concepts related to
communication specifically its definition,
types, and components. Moreover, you
will be able to know how communication
is influenced by media and information.
So, are you ready?
COMMUNICATION
Communication
Simply the act of transferring information from one place, person or group to another.
Every communication involves (at least) one sender, a message and a recipient. This
may sound simple, but communication is actually a very complex subject.
3
Souce:https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/dVSEZAdngzwUPfYpFuNYkJCBa975D1PnVTsUXrhX6VNRVCiLkLPqYamCAaKJsbsJ7yN7=s151
The communication process can be broken down into a series of eight essential
components, each of which serves an integral function in the overall process.
1. Source
The source imagines, creates, and sends the message. The source encodes the
message by choosing just the right order or the best words to convey the intended
meaning, and presents or sends the information to the audience (receiver).
4
2. Message
The message is the stimulus or meaning produced by the source for the receiver or
audience (McLean, 2005). The message brings together words to convey meaning but is
also about how it’s conveyed — through nonverbal cues, organization, grammar, style,
and other elements.
3. Channel
The channel is the way in which a message or messages travel between source and
receiver.” (McLean, 2005).
4. Receiver
The receiver receives the message from the source, analyzing and interpreting the
message in ways both intended and unintended by the source- (McLean, 2005).
5. Feedback
When you respond to the source, intentionally or unintentionally, you are giving
feedback. Feedback is composed of messages the receiver sends back to the source.
Verbal or nonverbal, all these feedback signals allow the source to see how well, how
accurately (or how poorly and inaccurately) the message was received (Leavitt &
Mueller, 1951).
6. Environment
The environment is the atmosphere, physical and psychological, where you send
and receive messages- (McLean, 2005). Surroundings, people, animals, technology, can
all influence your communication.
7. Context
The context of the communication interaction involves the setting, scene, and
expectations of the individuals involved- (McLean, 2005).
.
8. Interference
Interference, also called noise, can come from any source. Interference is anything
that blocks or changes the source’s intended meaning of the message-(McLean, 2005).
This can be external or internal/psychological.

MEDIA AND INFORMATION
Media
The main means of mass communication (broadcasting, publishing, and the Internet)
regarded collectively.
The communication outlets or tools used to store and deliver information or data.
Mass media and other forms of communication technology have an enormous
influence in helping to shape public opinion and underlying sentiment.
Media makes communicating a lot easier than before, there is internet present
today which enables chatting with friends and families through phone screens. It greatly
affects the distribution of information; it widens the range in just a short time. There is also
TV Networks, radios, that communicates with a large amount of people.
Information
It is the supply of communication, it makes talking and sharing opinion with others
much more meaningful
Information is what we talk about, even the mere thing that you inform your parents that you
are come home late via phone call or chat is giving out information.
Media and Information Literacy recognizes the primary role of information and media
in our everyday lives. It lies at the core of freedom of expression and information - since it
empowers citizens to understand the functions of media and other information providers, to
7
critically evaluate their content, and to make informed decisions as users and producer of
information and media content.
Media and Information literacy (MIL) enables people to show and make informed
judgments as users of information and media, as well as to become skillful creators and
producers of information and media messages in their own right
