In this module, you are going

communication specifically its definition,
types, and components. Moreover, you
will be able to know how communication
is influenced by media and information.
So, are you ready?

COMMUNICATION

Communication
 Simply the act of transferring information from one place, person or group to another.

 The imparting or exchanging of information by speaking, writing, or using some

other medium. The successful conveying or sharing of ideas and feelings.
 The root of the word “communication” in Latin is communicare, which means to
share, or to make common

 Every communication involves (at least) one sender, a message and a recipient. This
may sound simple, but communication is actually a very complex subject.

The transmission of the message from sender to recipient can be affected by

a huge range of things. These include our emotions, the cultural situation, the medium used to
communicate, and even our location. The complexity is why good communication skills are
considered so desirable by employers around the world: accurate, effective and unambiguous
communication is actually extremely hard.

TWO TYPES OF COMMUNICATION

ESSENTIAL COMPONENTS OF COMMUNICATION

The communication process can be broken down into a series of eight essential
components, each of which serves an integral function in the overall process.

1. Source
The source imagines, creates, and sends the message. The source encodes the
message by choosing just the right order or the best words to convey the intended
meaning, and presents or sends the information to the audience (receiver).

4
2. Message
The message is the stimulus or meaning produced by the source for the receiver or
audience (McLean, 2005). The message brings together words to convey meaning but is
also about how it’s conveyed — through nonverbal cues, organization, grammar, style,
and other elements.

3. Channel
The channel is the way in which a message or messages travel between source and
receiver.” (McLean, 2005).

 Spoken channels include face-to-face conversations, speeches, phone

conversations and voicemail messages, radio, public address systems,
and Skype.

 Written channels include letters, memorandums, purchase orders,

invoices, newspaper and magazine articles, blogs, email, text
messages, tweets, and so forth.

4. Receiver
The receiver receives the message from the source, analyzing and interpreting the
message in ways both intended and unintended by the source- (McLean, 2005).

5. Feedback
When you respond to the source, intentionally or unintentionally, you are giving
feedback. Feedback is composed of messages the receiver sends back to the source.
Verbal or nonverbal, all these feedback signals allow the source to see how well, how
accurately (or how poorly and inaccurately) the message was received (Leavitt &
Mueller, 1951).

6. Environment
The environment is the atmosphere, physical and psychological, where you send
and receive messages- (McLean, 2005). Surroundings, people, animals, technology, can
all influence your communication.

7. Context
The context of the communication interaction involves the setting, scene, and
expectations of the individuals involved- (McLean, 2005).
.
8. Interference
Interference, also called noise, can come from any source. Interference is anything
that blocks or changes the source’s intended meaning of the message-(McLean, 2005).
This can be external or internal/psychological.

5
COMMUNICATION AS INFLUENCE BY MEDIA AND INFORMATION

Communication can be affected by external factors

or from the environment around us. Like news, it is
timely changing and requires the support of facts
and information. And therefore, be affected by:

MEDIA AND INFORMATION

Media

 The main means of mass communication (broadcasting, publishing, and the Internet)
regarded collectively.
 The communication outlets or tools used to store and deliver information or data.
 Mass media and other forms of communication technology have an enormous
influence in helping to shape public opinion and underlying sentiment.

Media is also an important accountability of mechanism .It raises important

issues, corruption for example, that might otherwise never be publicly debated or addressed
but the media can also, in some cases, become an instrument for the dissemination of false
and inflammatory messages and values that do not promote respect or well-tempered
dialogue and discussion. Negative messages can divide communities and can help perpetuate
the stereotypes that nurture violence.

Media makes communicating a lot easier than before, there is internet present
today which enables chatting with friends and families through phone screens. It greatly
affects the distribution of information; it widens the range in just a short time. There is also
TV Networks, radios, that communicates with a large amount of people.

Information

 It is the supply of communication, it makes talking and sharing opinion with others
much more meaningful

Information is what we talk about, even the mere thing that you inform your parents that you
are come home late via phone call or chat is giving out information.

Media and Information greatly affects communication in many ways. It helps for a

greater cause, we people find the best ways to reach our loved ones and any other people on
that matter. For we want to make things easier and less of hassle, it is called innovating/
improving communication.

Empowerment of people through Media and Information Literacy (MIL) is an

important prerequisite for fostering equitable access to information and knowledge and
promoting free, independent and pluralistic media and information systems.

Media and Information Literacy recognizes the primary role of information and media
in our everyday lives. It lies at the core of freedom of expression and information - since it
empowers citizens to understand the functions of media and other information providers, to

7
critically evaluate their content, and to make informed decisions as users and producer of
information and media content.

Media and Information literacy (MIL) enables people to show and make informed
judgments as users of information and media, as well as to become skillful creators and
producers of information and media messages in their own right

GENERALIZATION

Okay dear, let’s generalize our lesson.

Communication is the way on how we express our feelings, emotions or

ideas in another person. There are two types of communication: the verbal and
non-verbal communication. The verbal communication involves the use of
words or speech or auditory language to express emotions or tthoughts or
exchange information while non-verbal communication involves the use of
visual or non-verbal cues such as facial expressions, eye or body movements,
gestures, and many more without speaking. There are essential components of
communication: Source, Message, Channel, Receiver, Feedback, Environment,
Context and Interference.

Media and information affect communication. Media serves as the

communication tool in delivering information’s. Media makes communicating a
lot easier than before, there is internet present today which enables chatting with
friends and families through phone screens.
