THE MAKING OF OUR AMERICAN REVOLUTION

Some might say that the American colonists were ungrateful for first leaving their homeland and

then rebelling. For whatever individual reasons they had, they left England, Ireland, Scotland, Germany,

and a few other places to see what would become in the British Colony across the ocean. Not all was

tranquil in the American colonies though.

A major problem, especially to the North, were the French and their Indian allies picking-off the

settlers left and right. So the colonists cried out for protection and reinforcements from England.

Finally, the ships arrived not so much out of pity for the dead settlers, but due to fear that the French

would claim more territory. An expensive war began which lasted seven long years. It wasn't easy, but

the French finally surrendered and the 1763 Paris treaty was signed.

Afterwards, there were numerous slow but sure actions, by the Monarchy, that angered the

colonists leading to the revolution. To set the framework of colonial times, there were thirteen colonies -

New Hampshire, Massachusetts (included Maine), New York, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Pennsylvania,

New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia. (There was

also Nova Scotia which did not become part of the United States of America.) These colonies were

either royal colonies (ruled directly by the crown), chartered colonies (under the crown's grant for

property and authority) or proprietary colonies (granted by the crown to a proprietor or proprietors who

had full governing rights). For example, Royal colonies were New Jersey, New Hampshire, New York,

Virginia, Georgia and the Carolinas. Proprietary colonies were Delaware, Maryland and Pennsylvania.

(The Penn family essentially owned and controlled Pennsylvania.) The chartered colonies were

Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts. (The Massachusetts Bay Colony was prevalent.)
