INTERDISCIPLINARY CONTEXTUALIZATION (ICon) and INQUIRY-BASED LESSON

PLAN IN SCIENCE

Teacher’s Name: Edwin P. Carsido Grade Level/Subject: G9 – Science

Topic/Title: Percentage Composition Time Allotment: 1 hour

Date: April 8, 2021

Standards, Competencies, and Objectives

CONTENT STANDARD: The learner demonstrates understanding of the unit, mole, that
quantitatively measures the number of very small particles of
matter.
PERFORMANCE The learners should be able to analyze the percentage
STANDARD: composition of different brands of two food products and decide
on
the products’ appropriate percentage composition.
LEARNING Determine the percentage composition of a compound given its
COMPETENCY: chemical formula and vice versa.
CODE: S9-IIIe-31
OBJECTIVES: 1. Define percentage composition of a compound.
2. Solve for the percentage composition of a given compound.
3. Appreciate the importance of identifying the percentage
composition of a compound.
Description of Contextualization
Making Connections: 1. Applying knowledge in interacting the real world.
2. Demonstrating a real life examples.
Related Subjects/Topics
MAPEH – Creativity and Illustrating Scenarios
Values Education –Taking care of the environment
English – Literacy Skill, Presenting Opinions, and Supporting Main Ideas
Mathematics – Numeracy Skill
Learning Activities:
ELICIT (5 minutes): Eliciting Students’ Prior Knowledge
Brainstorming Activity!
Questions:
1. What do you mean by the word percent?
2. In our class, how many percent are boys and how many percent are girls?

ENGAGE (5 minutes):
 Present a pie graph of the % composition of water. How many percent of hydrogen and oxygen
are present in water?
 How did you get the percentage of hydrogen and water?
INTERDISCIPLINARY CONTEXTUALIZATION (ICon) and INQUIRY-BASED LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE

(The teacher will ask somebody to show his/her computations in getting the Percentage
Composition of the water)

(The teacher will then discuss the process in getting the percentage composition of water and
present the general formula)

EXPLORE (5 minutes): (Inquiry, Critical and Higher-order Thinking Skills)

GROUP ACTIVITY

 Working by group, learners answers will be given sample problems.

Group 1 - Soil that is already depleted of its nutrients needs fertilizer. One of the nutrients
needed to replenish the soil is nitrogen. If you are an agricultural technician helping a
farmer, which among these fertilizers are you going to use? Show your computations to
convince the farmer about your choice.
a. ammonia- NH3
b. ammonium sulfate – (NH4)2SO4
c. ammonium nitrate – NH4NO3

Group 2 - Glucose (C6H12O6) is a six-carbon sugar (hexose) which is also known as the blood
sugar. It is an energy source that fuels our body. How many percent of carbon, hydrogen and
oxygen is present in glucose?

Group 3 - The “fuel value” of the hydrogen-containing fuels depends on the mass percentage of
hydrogen (H). Rank the following compounds in terms of their “fuel value” with 1 as the
highest fuel value and 3 as the one with the lowest value:
a. ethane (C2H6)
b. propane (C3H8)
c. ethanol (C2H5OH)

Students activity and presentation will be graded using the following rubric:

ELABORATE (10 minutes): Interactive Discussion

The teacher will process the answer of the students based on the questions below:
1. In what other ways can we use percentage composition in our daily lives?
Agriculture- knowledge on the percentage of Nitrogen will help farmers in choosing
fertilizers
Wise consumer- because it is a good basis of choosing the food product we need to eat based
on its content.
Product development - percentage composition will indicate the correct amount of substances
needed in order to produce the expected product.
2. Can you give suggestions for its practical use? (pharmacy, construction, cooking etc.)

Evaluation (5 minutes)
Multiple Choice. Encircle the letter of the correct answer.
1. The mass of each element in a compound compared to the entire mass of the compound

multiplied by 100 percent is called ________.

a. Percentage Solution c. Percentage Allocation
b. Percentage Composition d. Percentage Concentration
2. The presence of SO2 in the atmosphere causes acid rain. How many percent sulfur is present
in SO2? (Sulfur= 32.065, Oxygen= 16, Molar Mass = 64.07 g/mole)
a. 40.00% c. 49.96%

b. Multiply by 100 each element of the compound to the total mass.
c. Get the mass of each element only.
d. none of the above
4. To check whether your answer is correct in solving percentage composition:
a. The mass of 1 element in the compound determines correctness
b. The mass of either the element present in the compound determines correctness
c. The total percentage of the elements in the compound is 99 or 100.
d. All statements are correct.
5. Knowledge about percentage composition is:
a. Useful in choosing the best fertilizer in choosing the best fertilizer that gives higher
amount of nitrogen and potassium in the soil.
b. It will help us to be a wise consumer.
c. It will indicate the correct amount of substances needed in order to produce expected
product.
d. All of the statements are correct.

EXTEND (Assignment)

Look for a label of a sample brand of milk and identify the compounds present on it. If there’s
no indicated chemical formula, surf the internet and determine the percentage composition of
each element present in the compound.
