    Participle Clauses

    Express the meaning of the following sentences, using participle clauses instead of underlined
    parts.

    1. The students who finish first should get on with their homework.

    2. Since we were too late, we decided to catch a taxi.

    3. Sarah received a large salary rise earlier this year so she is thinking of getting a new car.

    4. Not all the people who were asked to come actually turned up.

    5. The piece of wood which was keeping the window open has disappeared.

    6. I'm going to start going swimming again, now I have more time.

    7. As their children have all left home, they are thinking of moving somewhere smaller.

    8. As she believes him to be the murderer, Anya is absolutely terrified.

    9. Armelle, who has been forced to marry a man she does not love, decides to throw herself
    into her work.

    10. The book was first published in 1903 and it has been reprinted many times.

    11. When he hears the shot, Mark rushes into the house.

    Combine each pair of sentences to make one sentence, using a participle clause. Decide where to
    put the clause.

    1. She stayed at school for ten years. She hated every minute of it.

    2. The London Book fair is a huge trade fair. It is held once a year in the city.

    3. His new book will bo loved by children everywhere. It was voted 'Book of the Year'.

    4. These books are all also worth reading. They were nominated for the same prize.

    5. John is often send out of his class. He is a rather disruptive child.

    6. The school I attended was very well-respected. It got excellent exam results every year.
