IO Prompt: Examine the ways in which the global issue of your choice is presented

through the content and form of one of the literary works and one of the non- literary
texts that you have studied.

Global and Narrowed Down Global Issue: The global issue here is politics,
power and justice which explores the consequences of selfishness and greed
for wealth.

1. 1-minute general Introduction:

• Mrs. Midas is one of Duffy’s famous poems where it is a dramatic

monologue spoken from the perspective of Midas’s wife. It details the
aftermath of his granted wish. It often deals with themes of love, lust,
motherhood while the poem often throws light on the relationship,
Mrs. Midas shares with her husband and the terrible consequences of
his greedy wish.

• Mrs. Midas is originally from the “World’s Wife” collection while some
examples of poems include “Mrs. Tiresias” and “Mrs. Lazarus”. Carol Ann
Duffy’s “Mrs. Midas” highlights the potential global issue of the
consequences of selfishness and greed for never-ending wealth where
we see King Midas as an important character whose wish became the
sole reason for the terrible times he had to face in the coming future like
the loss of relationships( with his wife Mrs. Midas), loss of contact with
the world, and ultimately losing his own mental peace and sanity.T

• This cartoon was made by a famous Indian cartoonist Satish Acharya.

The cartoon displays the abuse of power in the form of corruption where
people are denied loans as they are unable to speak a local language.
Here the lender accumulates huge sums of money where the global
issue of selfishness and greed for wealth are effectively displayed where
he ultimately is caught red-handed by the tax authorities and is charged
eventually for hoarding large sums of money.

• Here the connection between the literary, non-literary text and the
global issue is the depiction of the consequences of a man’s selfishness
and his never-ending greed for wealth where he’s deprived from the real
benefits of life like having food, shelter and his comforts while his greed
eventually impacts him largely as he loses his most treasured
relationship with his wife. The consequences of greed for wealth is
dangerous as in the form of corruption the poor are badly impacted as
they fail to receive the benefits of the schemes the state government
offers to them implying the fact that power corrupts a person’s mindset.

• Here the contextual issue depicted here is the consequences of a man’s

selfishness and greed for wealth which impacts relationships, and also
affects the society as a whole. The IO prompt explores the global issue of
the consequences of selfishness and greed for wealth in the following
literary and non-literary texts , “Mrs. Midas” and Satish Acharya’s
cartoon on corruption.

2. 2-minute Literary Work Discussion:

• In stanza 2, the line 7”Now the garden was long ……..seems to drink the
light of the sky,” here Duffy uses imagery to create suspense in the
poem while also introducing a powerful juxtaposition between
darkness(dark of the ground) and light(last night on the evening sky)
while here the speaker personifies Earth as she says that it “seems to
drink “ the remaining light; personification thus imbues the landscape
with agency and vitality. The line “we grew Fondante d’Automne- and it
sat in his palm like a light bulb” explores the global issue of the
consequences of selfishness and greed for wealth where Mrs. Midas and
her husband grow pear trees together( symbol of life and regeneration)
together where you can say that the tree is a representation of the
couple’s living relationship .When Mrs. Midas realizes at that moment
that her husband hasn’t just plucked a pear of a tree; he is in essence
breaking apart the tree the couple grew together- indicating the end of
their relationship. Adding to this the Fondante d’Automne- is a particular
variety of French pair which suggests that they are wealthy enough to
cultivate a well -regarded variety of a French tree. Also implying the fact
that they don’t require gold, hence proving King Midas’s wish to be
based purely on greed for wealth.

3. 2-minute LITERARY EXTRACT discussion:

• In stanza 5 “It was then……I locked the cat in the cellar” explores the
global issue of the consequences of selfishness and greed for wealth as
Mr. Midas negatively reacts to the untimely outcomes of his wish as the
wine he had just drunk starts turning to gold in his stomach. “He sank to
his knees” is an anaphora smartly used by Duffy which links to another
line” he drew the binds” , a simplified repetitive syntax of these
sentences suggests to us on the kind of detachment on the part of Mr.
Midas as he too has become an object devoid of any feelings. Another
consequence results as Mrs. Midas hides her cat in the cellar scared due
to the long-term consequences of the actions of her husband where he
has the power to turn anything into gold. In stanza 10, the line ”You
were getting close….lemon mistake” shows as how Mrs. Midas while
taking steps towards her husband she notices that right from the trout in
the river, to the image of the rabbit , everything turns into gold. Duffy
describes the rabbit as a “beautiful lemon mistake” as she juxtaposes
the physical beauty of the golden rabbit to the horrifying reality of it
hanging from the “larch” or the coniferous tree, thus justifying the global
issue of the consequences of selfishness and greed for wealth as here
Mr. Midas’s actions has affected his relationship with his wife , also has
been proven dangerous to the living creatures and Mother Earth too
subsequently.

4. 2-minute discussion of the NON-LITERARY BODY WORK

• This is a political cartoon based on corruption made by a famous

cartoonist Satish Acharya. The body of work here is the “Don’t worry
about POLITICAL CORRUPTION” cartoon; “Odd-Even plan to reduce
corruption” cartoon. The cartoon displays the political issue of
corruption where people are denied loans as they are unable to speak a
local language. Later as a consequence the lender is charged by the tax
payers for hoarding huge sums of money. The purpose of the cartoon
here is to convey the message to the people about the various forms of
the political issue of corruption where often many moneylenders hoard
huge sums of money with themselves and deny the ones who are in real
need of such loans(here people belonging to lower-income
backgrounds) on the pretext of them not knowing a certain language.
The global issue of the consequences of selfishness and greed for wealth
is perfectly displayed where the moneylender is ultimately charged by
the taxpayers for hoarding huge sums of money(also termed as black
money). The main purpose here was to make people aware on the
political issue of corruption in various forms in our society.

5. 2-minute NON-LITERARY EXTRACT discussion:

• The cartoonist makes explicit use of visual representation here

where the lender is greedy where he is shown to have hoarded
large sums of money, while perfectly showcasing the
consequences of selfishness and greed for wealth where people
belonging to lower income backgrounds are denied loans on the
pretext of not being able to speak a local language. This also
highlights the abuse of power where the rich benefit from highly
profitable loans while the poor is often at a disadvantage here.
Another consequence caused due to the extreme greed for wealth
is effectively displayed here when the lender is charged heavily by
the tax authorities for hoarding large sums of money.

6. Conclusion:

• The global issue of politics, power and justice is effectively displayed by

highlighting the consequences of selfishness and greed for wealth where
often selfishness and greed for wealth can be instrumental in destroying
relationships, while also being proven dangerous to the welfare of the
people where through the abuse of power in the form of corruption
everyone gets affected simultaneously by Duffy’s “Mrs. Midas” and the
cartoon based on corruption by the famous cartoonist Satish Acharya.
