I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of a 60-minute lesson, the students should be able to:

a. Use the periodic table to predict the chemical behavior of an element.


b. Describe the trends in properties of the elements such as ionization energy, electron
affinity, and electronegativity;
c. Analyze the trends in properties of the elements based on the behavior of an element;
and
d. Cite the importance of trends in the periodic table.

E. Science Concepts • Ionization Energy
- It is the energy required to remove an electron.

• Electron Affinity
- It is the amount of energy released or absorbed by
an atom.
- Increases from left to right across a period, and
from bottom to top within a group.
- Metals generally have low electron affinity
- Nonmetals have high electron affinity.
 Electronegativity
- It is the ability of an atom to attract electrons
toward itself.
- Electronegativity generally increases from left to
right within a period, and bottom to top within a
group.
- When two atoms of different elements share a pair
of electrons, one atom becomes partially positive
and the other becomes partially negative.

B. Motivation “To give you an idea about what we will tackle for
this morning, let‟s have an activity.

Instruction: I will divide the class into four groups.


Each group will be given 2 pieces of magnet and
paper where the magnets will be placed. They
need to observe the position of the magnet and
how much energy they need to exert to keep the
two magnets apart. After that, each group will
have a representative to share their observation
to the class. An allotted time of 5 minutes will be
given to you.

Trends in the Periodic Table”
“So we have three common properties of
elements that can predict using periodic table
which are:”
• Atomic Radius – distance from the nuclei
to the outermost part of the atom.
• Ionization Energy - energy needed to
remove electron.
• Electron Affinity – it is the energy
removed or absorbed by an atom.
• Electronegativity – energy needed to
absorbed electron by an atom. It is the
ability of an atom to pull electron towards
itself.
o Partially positive – when an atom
released electron.
o Partially negative – when an atom
absorbed electron.
“ To understand further about our topic, let‟s dig
into the Trends in periodic table”

“As you can see, a nucleus is located at the
center of the atom, From the nuclei to the
outermost part of the atom or shell is what we
called atomic radius. Is that clear class? Any

“Let‟s proceed. Next is ionization energy”
 Ionization energy – is the energy
required to remove an electron from
gaseous atom to form a cation. Base from
the periodic table the ionization energy
generally increases from left to right
within a period and bottom to top within a
group. Atoms bound very tightly to their
electrons have high ionization energy,
while those loosely bound have low
ionization energies. This means that the
atomic radius of the atom also increases.
The noble gases have relatively high
ionization energies, confirming the
stability of this element group.
“This means that the element that has highest
ionization energy is Helium while the element
that has the lowest ionization energy is
Francium.”
“Take note class that ionization energies can be
expressed in terms of various energies such as
electron volts, kilojoules or kilocalories per
mole.

“Let‟s proceed to electron affinity. Who wants to

 Electron Affinity – is the amount of
energy released or absorbed when an
electron is added to a gaseous atom,
forming an anion. Electron affinity
increases from left to right within a period,
and from bottom to top within a group.

“Same with IE, electron affinity increases from


left to right within a period and bottom to top
within a group”
“So what element has the highest electron
affinity?” Helium ma‟am

“Very good, because Helium is located at the


upper right corner where electron affinity is
strongest.”

 Electronegativity – is the ability of an


atom to attract electrons toward itself.

- When two atoms of different elements


share a pair of electrons, one atom
becomes partially positive and the
other becomes partially negative.

 Partial charges usually indicated by the


greek letter delta

“So how can you identify what atom is partial


negative and partial positive?" The atom released
electron is called
partial positive while
the atom absorbed
electron is called
partial negative.
“Very well said. Because the atomic radius of the
atom that released electron will sink while the
atom that gained electron will expand.
“Do you follow class?” Yes ma‟am

The electronegativity of non-metals is high while


metals are low. These suggest that metals tend
to lose electrons and nonmetals tend to gain
electron. Notice that electronegativity generally
increases from left to right within a period, and
bottom to top within a group.

“To summarize the trends of elements in a


periodic table, atomic radius increase from right
to left within a period and top to bottom within a
group. While ionization energy, electron affinity
and electronegativity increase from left to right
within a period, and bottom to top within a group.
And metals are tends to released/give electrons
while non-metals are tends to received/gained
electrons.”
