I. OBJECTIVES At the end of the one – hour period, the students should be able to:

demonstrate an uderstanding of the unit, mole that quantitatively

A. Content Standards
measures the number of very small particles of matter
analyze the percentage composition of different brand of two food
B. Performance Standards

answer takes all the candy.

B. Establishing a purpose for ENGAGE

the lesson
Start by asking these questios;
How are pieces of matter quantified?
How do market vendors sell the rice grains? eggs?
How do chemists measure the chemical substance in the laboratory?
C. Presenting
examples/instances of the
new lesson State the objectives of the lesson.

D. Discussing new concepts EXPLORE

and practicing new skills #1
Group the students into 4. Provide them the materials.
Instruct students to perform the activity 1 found on page 177-179 ofheir LM and record
their data in a table and answer the guide question.
E. Discussing new concepts
and practicing new skills #2 COUNTING BY GETTING THE MASS OF AN OBJECT

Objectives:
1.Measure the mass of an object.
2. Relate the mass of the object to the number of pieces per item.

Materials Needed:
25 pieces paper clips of the same size and kind per group

1 Platform balance (preferably with 0.01 precision) per group

Procedure:
1. Measure and record the mass of 25 paper clips (A)
2.Divide the mass obtained by 25 to find the average mass of one paper clip.(B)
3. Get a handdful of staple wires and measure its mass.(C)
4. Determine the number of paper clips by computing, not counting. (D)
Total mass/Average Mass of each paper clip
5. Count and record the number of paper clips (E)

Guide Q1. Is the number of paper clips in step 4 the same as the number of paper clips in
step 5?Why do you think so?
Guide Q2.Having an experience in counting by getting the mass, give some ways in which
you can apply this procedure in daily life situations.

Tell them the activity they just performed is for them to have a feel of how chemists
determine the number of particles based on the mass of the substance.
EXPLAIN
Present to them the concept of mole.
F. Developing mastery (leads
Let them solve problems on moles and Avogadro’s number conversion.
