COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is a comprehensive study of the basic Japanese language and culture. It
introduces students to various daily expressions that can be used in simple situations as well as
learning how to use Japanese grammatical patterns necessary to compose basic sentences. It
also introduces students to the Japanese syllabary that will equip them to correctly pronounce
words such as vocabulary, phrases and expressions that can be applied in various situations.

Expected competence
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
1 understand a little about Japanese culture.
2 learn basic Japanese vocabulary words.
3 use basic greetings:
4 introduce himself/herself to others.
Examples:
A cuisine: Sushi ,sashimi, tonkatsu, soba, udon, ramen, takoyaki….
B fashion: kimono, yukata, geta,fundoshi.
C city: Tokyo, Osaka, Yokohama, Hokkaido, Okinawa.
D festival: yukimatsuri, tanabata matsuri, gion matsuri, esa matsuri.
E traditional things: kabuki, nou,
F historical things: castles, temples, shrines, samurai, ninja,katana.
G modern culture: animation, manga
Takuya san: Let’s enjoy conversation and coffee time with me.
Takuya has a girlfriend. Her name is “Ai”.
Instructions
1… Listen to Mr. Yasuda’s tape carefully.
2… Repeat after tape.
3… Look at both English and Japanese, then speak slowly and clearly.
4… Look up and practice speaking them until you can speak them fluently.
5… Use greeting at your daily life. (everywhere and every time)

2 Takuya: Good afternoon, Jolly chan. “Jolly chan, Kon nichi wa.”
Jolly: Hi, Takuya. “ Ha-iiiii , Takuya san.”
“SAN” is added to the given name or family name of the listeners or a third
person to show the speaker’s respect to that person.
It should never be used with the speaker’s own name.
“KUN” is also added to the names, usually to the younger male.
“CHAN” is added to small children’s names instead of “SAN” to indicate familiarity.
“SENSEI” is used for the teachers, doctors, congressman and lawyer.
Yasuda sen sei says: These are the conversation between Takuya and Ai.
Practice reading from # 1 to # 4 many times and memorize all. Ganbatte!
