Guide Questions:
Have you ever wondered why
different places on Earth have
different climates and weather?

A Coordinate system is a way of

locating points by labelling them
with a number called coordinates.
Latitude is the imaginary lines on
a map or globe that measures
distance in degrees of north or
south of the equator. Latitude lines
extend horizontally, from east to
west on a Globe.
Longitude is the imaginary lines
on a map or globe that measures
distance in degrees from east to
west of the prime meridian.
Longitude lines extend vertically,
from pole to pole on a Globe.
The equator is the imaginary line
circling the Earth halfway between
north and south poles.
Prime meridian is the great circle
on the Earth’s surface passing
through the north and south poles,
which is considered 0-degree
longitude. It passes through
Greenwich, England. It is used as
a reference point for measuring
longitude east and west.

The Tropic of Capricorn can be

found at latitude 23.5 degrees
south. The Tropic of Cancer is at
23.5 degrees north. The equator is
the circle where the sun can be
found directly overhead at noon.
when the Sun is directly over the
Tropic of Capricorn at noon, it will
not be visible from the Arctic
Circle. The Tropics of Capricorn
and Cancer were delineated
because they are both places
within the hemisphere where it’s
possible for the sun to be directly
overhead.
The tropics are regions
of Earth that lie roughly in the
middle of the globe. The tropics
between the latitude lines of

the Tropic of Cancer and
the Tropic of Capricorn. The
tropics include the Equator and
parts of North America, South
America, Africa, Asia, and
Australia. The tropics account for
36 percent of
Earth's landmass and are home to
about a third of the world's people.

The tropics are warm all year,

averaging 25 to 28 degrees
Celsius (77 to 82 degrees
Fahrenheit). This is because the
tropics get more exposure to the
sun. Because of all that sun, the
tropics don't experience the kind
of seasons the rest of Earth does.
The tropical seasons are broken
up into just two: the wet season
and the dry season.

The Arctic Circle is a line of

latitude at 66.5 degrees north of
the equator and the Antarctic
Circle is a line of latitude at 66.5
degrees south.
