CAR Culture and Traditions


APAYAO
1. “lapat” (which means prohibited or off-limits),
2. Isneg, or Isnag, kinship is bilateral, meaning children are equally related to both the mother

KALINGA
1. The Tingguians, also called Isneg, are engaged in various crafts. The most important of which is
bamboo crafts production. It is for this reason that Abra is aggressively positioning itself as the
“Bamboo Capital of the Philippines”.
2. Mambabatok which can be loosely translated as 'person who hits/taps' are traditional stick and
bamboo tattoo artists of the Kalinga people One of them is the famous mambabatok, Whang Od.
3. The iKalingas believe on a supreme deity which they call “Kabuniyan”. Like the Christian God,
iKalingas believe that “Kabuniyan” is the giver of life, source of blessings, and their protector;
and believe in punishment if they transgress his laws.
4. They have a lot of traditions from birth to death. Upon birth, a baby is welcome through a
“kontad” butchering chicken or pig to announce a new member of the family. For well-to-do
families, they extend to do the “masama” and the“kopya”, butchering also a pig.
5. They have also three main values: Paniyaw (taboo), Ngilin (prohibited acts), and Ba-in (shame)
which serve as the general guiding principles the whole of their lives.
6. Salidummay, Dan-dannag or Sus-suray are songs composed extemporaneously with melodies
differ from one tribe to another. It expresses jubilation and a way of communication by young
and old local tribes.
7. Dagdagas pertains to the relationship between a man and woman without the intention of getting
married and this is not considered evil and dishonorable within the context of Kalinga society and
the punishment is the frequent death of one’s children.
8. The “tupayya” (dance) is one of the courtship dances of Kalinga.
IFUGAO
1. Traditional attire for male Ifugaos consists of a simple G-string. Ifugao women, on the contrary,
wear tapis, a wraparound skirt.
2. The native Ifugao house looks like an elevated pyramid with wooden walls and a ladder
3. people perform rituals to commemorate life stages that start from courtship, marriage, pregnancy,
childbirth, infant care and child-rearing, adolescence, adulthood, old age, and, death and burial,
which can occur in any of the stage aforementioned.

MOUNT PROVINCE
1. "Weaver’s Paradise" because of the different weaving centers that create unique designs which
indicate the province’s cultural heritage. Various woven materials like knapsacks, bags, purses,
placemats, linen, belts, blankets, and native costumes are being made in these different weaving
houses.
2. The traditional attire in Mountain Province is that men wear long strips of handwoven loin cloth
called “wanes”. The woman wears a kind of wrap-around skirt called “lufid”
3. The Bontoc is a group of former headhunters that have traditionally lived in the steep gorge
region along the upper Chico River in the Central Mountain Province of northern Luzon. They
have traditionally lived by hunting, fishing, and farming
4. The Daw-es is practiced by the Igorots with some variations, depending on the place. The
primary purpose of the ritual is to "cleanse" the mind of the survivors, especially the rescuers, in
case of massive death.
BENGUET
1. Kabayan is known for its unique traditional practice of burying the dead which include
mummification that was observed in the olden times
2. In preserving traditional crafts, the skills in weaving, pottery, embroidery and beads making are
the main projects for the implementing communities.

APAYAO
1. Mataguisi Church- The old Spanish church is a historical landmark remaining in the province
2. Emilia Church Ruins- It is the landmark of the beginning of the spread of Catholicism in
Apayao.
3. ASC Museum- ASC museum features the collection of Allen Mayodog, Who collected cultural
items from the Isnag and Ifugao tribes.
4. Lussok Crystal Cave and Underground River-On the rocky slope of Barangay Dagupan, one
will find this multi-chamber cave with centuries-old stalactites and stalagmites embedded with
crystals that dance and shine
5. Bayugao Falls-A series of mini-waterfalls with naturally-built pools. Its cool and crystal-clear
waters cast a rejuvenating sight complementing the surrounding forests.
6. Calanasan Philippine Eagle Sanctuary-The vast lowland forests of Calanasan host the iconic
Philippine-Monkey Eating eagle, a critically-endangered species.

ABRA
1. San Lorenzo Ruiz Shrine-Originally built during the turn of the 19th century, it’s a beautiful
brick structure that is even older than the cathedral.
2. Santa Catalina de Alejandria Parish Church-known as the Tayum Church, is a 19th-century
Baroque church located at Brgy. Poblacion, Tayum, Abra, Philippines
3. Don Mariano Marcos Bridge-Third longest of its kind in the country. Its total length is even
longer than Calaba Bridge spanning 886.812 meters across the Lagben River connecting the
municipalities of Tayum and Dolores
4. Layugan Garden-The newest attraction in the province of Abra . It is called a “Layugan Garden”
5. Kaparkan Falls-also called Mulawin Falls, is located in an isolated place in Tineg, Abra
6. Piwek Rock Formation-A scenic natural rock formation in a river in Tineg. Getting here and
back involved a rough jeepney ride, river crossing, hiking and scrambling down the rock surfaces.
KALINGA
1. Aguinaldo Hills-It was used by General Emilio Aguinaldo as a common post during the
Philippine-American war.
2. Awichon Cultural Village-It was declared by the NCAA in May, 2008 as the Kalinga Center
for Culture and arts.
3. Lubo and Mangali Rice Terraces-Lubo and Mangali Rice Terraces are sheer wonders to
behold. From the road, they appear like circular cascades surrounding the village.
4. Maayas ayas Cave-A Hidden Subterranean Marvel in Balbalan, Kalinga,it is an exceptional
work of nature as it boasts an active subterranean river as well as beautiful stone formations.
5. Sulfur Hills-These hills are a testament to the mountain’s volcanic features
6. Sleeping Beauty Mountain-The mountain is called such because the silhouette of the
northern ridge resembles a sleeping woman.
7. Saltan River-One of the cleanest rivers in the Philippines. It has numerous deep pools with
crystal clear waters and stunning rock formations.

APAYAO – Kabugao
1. Sinursur-A native course cooked in a young bamboo shoot.

2. Patupat-Patupat is a delicacy made from glutinous rice cooked in sugarcane juice.

KALINGA – Tabuk City


1. Binungor-Stir-fried black snails, tengang daga, bamboo shoots, and bird chili.
2. Inandila-A native delicacy of Kalinga, made of pound malagkit/ sticky rice,Ladok(the brown
precipitate left in coconut oil extraction)
3. Zinagan-A version of Dinuguan: intestines and other pork innards that are fried until the whole
thing becomes crispy enough just like chicharon

IFUGAO- Lagawe
1. Binakle-It is made from glutinous rice (diket) that is pounded into a paste, wrapped in banana or
rattan leaves, and steamed.
2. Bayah-A rice wine made from the native rice of Ifugao which is best known and is widely used
during ceremonial occasions
3. Binaod-The intestines of pig is prepared just after the pig manure have been dried and collected

MT. PROVINCE- Bontoc


1. Etag-Etag can bring more aromatic flavor to the meat.
2. Pinikpikan-. It came from the word pikpik, meaning to lightly beat before cooking.
3. Tapey- wine, Tapey, also spelled tapuey or tapuy
4. Safeng-Made from naturally-fermented raw camote and/or cassava in a lot of water
5. Heirloom rice biko-Made of mountain violet sticky rice called ominio. (balatinaw)
BENGUET- La Trinidad
1. Patatim, Rose Bowl-In Baguio, that restaurant would be Rose Bowl. Rose Bowl is home-grown
and started out as “Rice Bowl” back in 1945.
2. Strawberry Short Cake-It almost doesn’t need an introduction. Vizco’s popular Strawberry
Shortcake is considered one of the best not only in the City of Pines,

1. Say - am Festival-February 14 “ALAWAGAN”, “TALIP and TAD-DO”
2. Apayao Day-The people of Apayao celebrate the Apayao Founder’s Day to reminisce with joy

September and October annually during the harvest season

ABRA
1. Dapil Festival- “Panagdapil”, the traditional method of extracting juice from sugarcane.
Sugarcane is one of Abra’s main agricultural products.
2. Kawayan Festival-It is celebrated annually on March 6-9 to commemorate the foundation
anniversary of the province. It was formerly known as 'Abrenian Festival'.
3. Arya Abra Festival-The cultural festival “Arya Abra” has become a traditional yearly festival
which is aimed not only for outsiders but also the natives of Abra.

KALINGA

IFUGAO
1. Imbayah Festival-Iguana such as Ifugao culture, rice planting, and the harvest and rice wine ❖
Celebrated once every three years to give thanks to the bounty and blessings the Ifugao receives

2. Tungoh and Hungduan Festival-A three-day activity celebrated every third week of April which
lasts for about 3-4 days.
3. Gotad ad Kiangan-It aims to create, intensify, sustain understanding, appreciation, and interest
in the different forms of Ifugao performing arts.
MT. PROVINCE
1. Am-among Festival-Bontoc opened its 106th establishment day and Am-Among Festival
Tuesday morning with a social parade highlighting 16 barangays of the town.
2. Lang-ay Festival Festival-It has become the largest come-on of the province, showcasing the
best of their cultural heritage.

BENGUET
1. Adivay festival-The goal was to start with a festival in Baguio and then spread out to the BLIST
(Baguio, La Trinidad, Itogon, Sablan, and Tuba)
2. Strawberry Festival- is celebrated every February and considered as a tourist attraction which
includes a float parade participated in by various barangays,
3. Panagbenga Festival-a is an annual flower festival celebrated every February which takes place
in Baguio City, Philippines. The term “Panagbenga” comes from a Kankanaey term meaning
“season of blooming”.
