Nineteen Eighty-Four is considered one of the most popular novels published in the twentieth century.
It was written by George Orwell in 1949. Orwell is also famous for other works like Animal Farm, a novella
that warned against oppressive governments. Similarly, Nineteen Eighty-Four has the same theme. It is one of
the novels that managed to predict the future to some extent. It did so through its emphasis on media
manipulation, and technology control overall.
The setting of the novel is a fictional world that is dominated by three powerful countries: Oceania,
Eastasia, and Eurasia. The main character of the novel is Winston Smith, an Oceanian citizen. Through the
events the protagonist goes through, the author presents the readers with a world where people are under total
control by a government called the Party, under the leadership of Big Brother. Wherever people go, they see
big pictures of Big Brother looking down on them and watching every move they make. It is a scary world
where people are not free.
Orwell's book could be categorised as a science-fiction story. It explores how through the manipulation
of technology, the government could have total control over its citizens. For example, in every person's room,
double-screened televisions called 'telescreens' are placed; they allow the Party to see and hear what everyone
is doing or saying all the time. Ultimately, Nineteen Eighty-Four is a warning against any dictatorship that
would rise in the future.
