IV. PROCEDURES
Let’s Fill Until It’s Full
Tell the learners to fill-in each trophic level with the corresponding
organisms.
Once the learners are through with the activity, ask the question,
“What does the energy pyramid show?”

THEIR ENVIRONMENT
Reiterate the statement of the learners about the energy pyramid. Tell them
that the energy pyramid shows the transfer of energy from one trophic level
to the next level.
Ask the learners:
B. Establishing a purpose 1. What if one organism does not exist in the particular trophic level?
for the lesson Will it affect the other organisms?
2. If it affects other organisms, will it affect the population of those
organism/s?
3. If yes, then how will it affect the population of those organisms?
C. Presenting
examples/instances of
the new lesson
Ask: How is the population of bird affected as shown at the upper right
corner of the picture?
Note: Elicit ideas from the learners until they were able to realize the effect
of invasive species and ask them to define invasive species in their
own words.
If the species of bird located at the upper right corner is an invasive species
and prey only on those birds, how will it affect the whole population of the
small bird species?
Ask the learners, what could be the possible effects of populations of
organisms on other populations of organisms?
Group Activity

TEACHER HANDOUT
Answers to questions:
3. How do these populations of invasive species of organisms affect the population of other organisms?
Answer: These populations of organisms decrease the population of other organisms due to competition of
food, territory, and native organisms are hunted as their food.
4. If the population of invasive species of organisms continue to grow in number, how will they affect the
population of the native species in the future?
Answer: In the near future, endemic organisms will soon become endangered and eventually become
extinct.

ACTIVITY SHEET
A. Read the article about the invasive species.
Some aquatic plants had been introduced into the Philippines for ornamental purposes. Two of
these are water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes ) and water fern (Salvinia molesta). However, these plants
become invasive as they affect oxygen supply and oxygen levels in the water. They also have an effect on
the reduction of the growth of phytoplanktons which serve as food for native fish populations.
Aside from aquatic plants, aquatic animals such as golden apple snail (Pomacea canaliculata) was
introduced to increase the protein source of Filipino diet, but has become a major pest in rice fields as it
feeds on rice seedlings. This species of snail does not only affect rice plantations but is also blamed to
displace native edible snail, Pila conica, in Luzon (Pagulayan, 1997). This is a truly an invasive alien species
as its utilization as food is less than its population in natural waters.
Freshwater fishes have been reported to affect native species of fish populations. White goby
(Glossogobius giurus) and the eleotrid (Hypseleotris agilis) are responsible for the loss of the endemic
species of cyprinids in Lake Lanao. Janitor fish (Pterygoplichthys pardalis) though not considered as a
predator affects native fish species as it competes for food with catfish, mudfish, carp, tilapia, and tarpons.
As these invasive species of organisms continue to flourish in the native waters, more populations
of endemic aquatic organisms will continue to suffer which may lead to their extinction.
