    PER BILLION (PPB)

    • Strengths of very dilute solutions


    • Expressed in terms of ppm and ppb PROOF STRENGTH
    • Example: • Twice the percentage strength of alcohol
    5 ppm = 5 parts in 1,000,000 parts • Example: 50% is 100 proof
    2 ppb = 2 parts in 1,000,000,000 parts

    Example: PROOF SPIRIT

    1.The concentration of a drug additive in animal feed is
    alcohol.
    12.5 ppm. How many milligrams of the drug should be
    used in preparing 5.2 kg of feed?
    PROOF GALLON

    Example:
    1. How many proof gallons are contained in 5 wine
    gallons of 75% v/v alcohol?

    MILIGRAMS PERCENT

    • Express the number of milligrams of substance in 100


    mL of liquid.
    • Denotes the concentration of a drug or natural
    substance in biologic fluid, as in blood.
    • Example: non-protein nitrogen in blood is 30 mg%
    means that each 100 mL of blood contains 30 mg of non-
    protein blood.
