Mr.

García’s Formula for Answering a Short Answer Question (SAQ)


In addition to the TEA strategy, Mr. García has created a step-by-step formula allowing you to
properly answer the listed question while also making it fit in the small box they give you to
write. Here are the step-by-step instructions.

Step 1: Your Thesis:


Always phrase your thesis with superlatives (i.e. “the best/most” or “the biggest”). It’s
the easiest way of making an argument. When you use superlatives you are making your
argument very clear. The problem with using “important factor” is while it still gives the
foundation for an argument it’s not as clear as superlatives (“best” or “most important”) and,
more importantly, runs the risk of restating the question and you get no points for that.

Example Theses: “(Evidence) played the biggest role in (concept addressed in question)
OR, IF SPACE IS A FACTOR “(Evidence) answers the question the best.”

Step 2: Your Evidence:


Always be specific when citing your evidence.
The more specific you are, the better chance you get at strengthening your argument. Be
careful with umbrella terms. They can help but only so much. Instead of using generic terms
like “crops” and “Native Americans” think of a specific example that goes beyond generalities.
For example “Crops like corn helped British settlers…” or “Native Americans such as
Pocahontas…” If you ONLY use generic umbrella terms, you won’t get the point. Make
sure you explain why your evidence is important to your argument.

Example evidence: “(Umbrella term) such as (SPECIFIC EVIDENCE FROM UMBRELLA


TERM) (whatever the evidence did).” OR, IF SPACE IS A FACTOR “(Specific evidence)
(whatever specific evidence did) The more evidence (choke evidence), the better.

Step 3: Your Analysis


Use one or more PERSIA factors to explain why your evidence and argument are so important.
When using your PERSIA factor explain why your evidence makes your argument the best.
Avoid using the word “factor” if you can and use words like “structure” (means by which people
get stuff done), “consequences” (the impact) or “event.”

Example Analysis: IF YOU HAVE SPACE, DO THE BUILD ONE, DISS ONE METHOD
EXPLAINED BELOW
Build One/Diss One Example: “This economic structure is more important than social structures
like (example of evidence that could be tied to “social”) because (your answer)”
OR, IF SPACE IS A FACTOR “The economic impact of (evidence) is the most important
because (your PERSIA explanation like “people could make money when they couldn’t before”
or “it allowed for businesses like cash crops” THE MORE EVIDENCE YOU PUT IN YOUR
ANALYSIS (BUILDING YOUR ARGUMENT AND/OR DISS ANOTHER) THE BETTER)
