separated by recombination)
 Thomas Hunt Morgan
The closer the genes, the greater the probability that they
would be inherited together.

Independently assorting genes : AaBb
 Coupling and repulsion phenomenon are concerned with
linkage.

 Coupling -dominant alleles are on the same homologue

chromosome and both recessive alleles are on the other
homologue chromosome. Thus, the parental gametes are AB
and ab. Some authors call this cis.

 Repulsion -each homologous chromosome has one dominant

and one recessive allele from the two genes. Thus, the
parental gametes are Ab and Ab. Some authors call this trans.

Single crossing over (SCO)
Double crossing-over (DCO)

2. Hemophilia in humans
Color Blindness

Female Genotypes Phenotypes

XCXC normal color vision
XCXc normal color vision
XcXc color blind
Male Genotypes
XCY normal color vision
color blind

Problem 1
 Both the husband and wife have normal vision. A
woman has a color-blind daughter. What can you
deduce about the child’s father?
Hemophilia

Key: XH –normal
Xh –hemophiliac

P1: XHXh x XHY

(Queen Victoria) (Prince Albert)
Problem 2
A hemophiliac man marries a woman who has a normal vision, but a
carrier of a gene for hemophilia.

a. What is the probability of having a hemophiliac daughter?

b. What is the probability of having a hemophiliac son?
