(c) A man deposits 𝑠ℎ𝑠 800,000 into his savings account on which interest is 15% per annum. If

(b) Prove that if the difference between the roots of the equation 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 = 0 is 1, then
𝑎2 = 𝑏 2 − 4𝑎𝑐.
(c) Find the values of a and b if 𝑎𝑥 4 + 𝑏𝑥 3 − 8𝑥 2 + 6 has a remainder of 2𝑥 + 1 when divided by

(b) Two bags contain similar balls. Bag A contains 4 red and 3 white balls while bag B contains 3
red and 4 white balls. A bag is selected at random and a ball is drawn from it. Find the probability
that a red ball is drawn.
22. (a) How many different arrangements can be made of the letters in the word STATISTICS:
(i) if there are no restrictions ii) If the vowels must not be together.

(ii) A group of nine has to be selected from ten boys and eight girls. It can consist of either five
boys and four girls or four boys and five girls. How many different groups can be chosen.

MECHANICS
23. (a) The vertices of a quadrilateral ABCD are A (4, 0), B (14 ,11), C (0 ,6), D (-10, -5). Prove that the
diagonals AC, BD bisect each other at right angles, and that the length of BD is four times that of
AC.

(b) ABCD is a rectangle. Forces of 9N, 8N and 3N act along the line DC, CB and BA respectively
in the direction indicated by the order of the letters. Find the; -
(i) magnitude of the resultant force. (ii) angle the resultant force makes with DC.

24. (a) Two points A and B are 2cm apart, if a force of 50N is used to move a body from A to B in 15 s.
(i) Find the work done. (ii) Calculate the rate at which the force is acting.
(b) The point P is 5 metres vertically above point O. A body of mass 0.6 kg is projected from P
vertically downwards with a speed of 3.5ms-1. Find the speed of the body when it reaches O.

25. A stone Q is projected vertically upwards with a speed of 5ms-1 from the top of a cliff 10m above the
ground. At the same time another stone P is projected vertically upwards from the bottom of the cliff
at 12ms-1. Calculate the
(a) Vertical distance between the two stones when Q is at its maximum.
(b) Velocity of P when the first stone is at its maximum.
(c) Time that elapses and position just before the two stones collide.

26. Five forces of 1N, 3N, 5N, 6N and 7N act along the lines AB, CB, AD, DB and CD respectively of a
triangle ABCD. The direction of the forces is given by the order of the letters. The 6N force makes
an angle of 300 with DC. Taking AB as horizontal, find the magnitude and direction of the resultant.

27. (a) A car decelerating at 0.95ms-1passes a certain point with a speed of 30ms-1. Find its velocity after
10s and the distance covered in that time.
(b) Two points A and B are 2om apart, if a force of 50N is used to move a body from A to B in 15s.
(i) Find the work done. (ii) Calculate the rate at which the force is acting.
