MOVEMENT CONCEPTS IN EDUCATIONAL GYMNASTICS

Gymnastics as forms exercises involving physical agility 'ability to do something quickly' and body
coordination, flexibility.

Is a person who supports the other to do the gymnastic activity and also prevent injury.

Significance/ importance of a spotter

Helps in reducing fear of getting injury

Gaining confidence and encouragement as he/ she performs the task

Caring of your health and safety in gymnastics

Before you practice gymnastics or perform a routine, spend at least 5 minutes warming up with some
light exercises and stretching

Practice on soft floors(for example a mattress, a sack of dry grass and others)

Work with an experienced teacher to make sure your technique is correct

Follow gym safety rules carefully, common safety rules include: limiting the use of equipment to one
person at a time, not wearing jewelry or other items that might get stuck on the equipment, practising
good jumping technique when using foam pits for example while jumping only onto your feet, back, or
bottom, and never diving head first or landing on your knees, foam pits are used to cushion landings or
any falls of a gymnast, always train with a partner or teacher

Use appropriate safety gears

Eat nutritious meals and stay hydrated

Get plenty of good quality sleep

If you get injured or feel pain while doing gymnastics, stop what you are doing right away.

Performance of basic movement

Basic movement exercises include

i) locomotion: walking, jogging and running

These are activities that you always engage in. However, they can be done with some technique like.

Walking

Running
Leap

ii) weight bearing exercises

Here you carry one another or carry some weights. These are activities which involve carrying of weight.
They include.

Arm resistance

Push up

Dumbbell chest press

Lateral raises

iii) transference of weight exercises

Weight can be transferred by.

Hopping

Jumping (triple jump, high jump and long jump)

Throwing object

iv) Body shapes

Human body is capable of making a variety of shapes.

A body shape is an extension of the whole body or part of it in various directions, body shapes therefore
refer to the position of the body in space

The size of the space available for exercise is what creates the need to change the body shape
