Short summary of their posts on #MotivationMonday,
Edwin is a MSc Forensic Anthropology graduate of University of Dundee, Scotland. He described his

tell their biological identity after death. Edwin also talked about his struggles and the limited
opportunities that the field has to offer.
#ThesisTuesday,
Edwin talked about his dissertation, specifically about disaster victim identification. He stated that there is
lack of equipment and personnel for the DVI operations. However, international organizations fill the gap
but such has led to over-reliance to foreign aid.
Edwin recommended to the government some steps in order to address such issues.
#WisdomWednesday,
Edwin stated about the obstacles in choosing his field. He talked about not figuring out earlier what he
really wanted in life. It was during one of the electives in his master’s degree that he encountered
Forensic Anthropology and got interested in it. He kept looking for opportunities in order to advance in
the field.
His takeaway in pursuing the longer path is the people he met along the way.
#ThrowbackThursday,
The scientist talked about his experience in handling human remains in the National Museum of
Anthropology of the Philippines. He was able to apply the techniques that he learned in UP, where he
pursued his undergraduate studies.
He reminisced of being a newbie in the said field and stated that no one is a master of his craft from the
beginning. He humbly shared that his skillset presently is more advanced than it was. And the hardship is
part of the journey.

bones being the last to remain when all soft tissues have decomposed, and every bit of bones tells a
different story. He shared that he was selected as a visiting scientist at New York and he is excited about
the opportunity to learn and experience more things.
In 5-10 sentences, what about this particular scientist inspired you?
Scientist Edwin Anadon has piqued my interest due to his field of choice, forensic anthropology. It
inspired me in such a way that the scientist is very much interested in his field, although it could be
argued that forensic anthropology is just the study of bones. However, if I may disprove, the bones that
are left by the people in the past tells a story that may be recorded in history and consumed by the
generations to come. The work of Scientist Edwin is a remarkable feat and such requires immense
dedication in order to come into reality and practice. As a history buff myself, I find a certain connection
with him. Hence, knowing his achievements has inspired me to do good in my chosen field and further
feed my inquisitive mind information in order to contribute and give back knowledge to my community
and society.

Profession / field: Science Communicator / Science Communication
University / Organization: Ateneo De Manila University / Imperial College London, UK
Short summary of their posts on #MotivationMonday,
Ingrid started her MotivationMonday post by sharing her educational background. She worked at public
health research but eventually shifted to the field that she is currently in. She shared about meeting
inspiring people in her journey and she is looking forward to what she can do in the future.
She then talked about qualifying for Chevening scholarship and being able to know yourself and never
underestimating what you have to offer. She also said that it was her second attempt in applying in the
said program and was scared in the process. Eventually, an opportunity came up and the rest was history.
#ThesisTuesday,
Ingrid shared about her dissertation about science journalism. She elaborated that science journalism has
developed very closely with development journalism in the country. Likewise, press censorship during
martial law has stunted the growth of such field. Lastly, science appears differently in local newspapers
and being coupled up with other sections of the newspapers.
Science journalism as a subject has a scarce related literature available in the country, however, she
managed to surpass and write her thesis with the help of friends and colleagues in the field who have
better access to the materials.
#WisdomWednesday,
Ingrid then shared some practical wisdom regarding scholarship applications, that even if you are rejected
dozens of times, you only need one offer to proceed. Second, on studying abroad, she said that a person
learns a lot outside of the country and you don’t have to beat yourself up. Lastly, on science
communication in the Philippines, she said that the field needs further work and the scientists in the field
needs a lot of support from the government in order to flourish.
#ThrowbackThursday,
Here, Ingrid reminisced about being in highschool and her lively experiences that molded her into
becoming the person that she is today. She shared that she was once a writer for their school publication,
she also took several minor classes in physics, creative writing in order to improve her own skillset.
#ThankGoditsFriday
Ingrid has further shared about her past experiences in the field of science communication. That she is
happy with how things turned out for her. She also elaborated about the importance of the field in
Philippine society, that there’s room for everyone to collaborate into. Basic education is needed in order
to be good in discerning and cultivating knowledge that we can use in our respective professions. In
closing, she also mentioned of doing our best, then leave it, there’s nothing we can do and everything will
just work out as it is.
#ScienceSaturday
Ingrid recalled the instances where despite being a science communicator, she too is being burned out by
the responsibilities and the spark of science is fading. She also reiterated that her field is still maturing
and she is still in it because she loves listening and sharing about the hard work of scientists. She then left
the post with a quote from Diane Ackerman:
“It began in mystery, and it will end in mystery, but what a savage and beautiful country lies in between.”
In 5-10 sentences, what about this particular scientist inspired you?
Ingrid has inspired me to maximize my potential more as a person. Seeing how she writes her posts, they
were engaging, bubbly and you can feel from the tone and the language that was used that she really
wants the readers to understand what she wants to convey. She simplified the definition of science
communication that those who have never heard of it before has become aware of it. She inspired me in
such a way that it made me want to check out if the newspapers are really not focusing or giving
emphasis on the science section and she encouraged me, an ordinary reader to try my luck in scholarships
and going out of my comfort zone in order to grow. Indeed, being a scientist in this country has its own
challenges. It is known that the scientific field is not given much emphasis compared to the military
spending of the government and there is a realistic brain drain that happened in the past, as well as the
present. Ingrid poses a crucial role in sharing the stories of science and making the future generations
interested in it.
