Learning Competency Explain the need to protect and conserve
tropical rainforests, coral reefs and
mangrove swamps (S6LT-IIi-j-6)
Objectives:
Within the specified period, learners should be able to:
 Explain the need to protect and conserve the tropical rainforest, coral reefs
and mangrove swamps.
 Identify human activities that can destroy the rainforests, corals reefs, and
mangrove swamps.
 Practice some ways on how to protect and conserve the tropical rainforest,
coral reefs and mangrove swamps.

ELICIT (Access Prior Knowledge) Materials

 Read and understand the words and its meaning..  Power point
Ecosystem - an environment where both living and non- Presentation
living things exist and interact with one another
Protect  Pictures of
Conserve healthy
 Picture Analysis ecosystems
- Identify the name of the ecosystem by completing  Pictures of
the missing letters. destroyed
 Show pictures of a healthy tropical rainforests, coral ecosystems
reefs and mangrove swamps.
 Compare the pictures with the destroyed tropical
rainforest, coral reefs and mangrove swamps.
 In our locality or region, where can we usually find the
tropical rainforest? Coral reefs? Mangrove swamps?
(Integration to Araling Panlipunan)
ENGAGE (Focus on the Topic)
 We need to protect and conserve the Earth’s resources.  Power point
We need to give high value to our tropical rain forests, Presentation
coral reefs and mangrove swamps.
 Here are some ways to protect and conserve these
natural resources.
 1. Habitat restoration
 2. Reforestation or replanting a forest
 3. Mangrove rehabilitation.
 4. Wildlife conservation which includes protecting a
sanctuary where animals live.
 5. Supporting projects of the government and non-
government organization that protect tropical rainforest,
coral reefs and mangrove swamps.
 6. Joining organizations that conduct educational
campaigns and give information on how to protect and
conserve our ecosystem.
 What have you observed to our forest nowadays? The
coral reefs? Mangrove swamps?
 Did you notice some unfavorable human activities that
could harm them?
 Some Human Activities that can harm the Ecosystem
- mining
- construction and building of subdivisions
- forest fire
- Clearing of mangrove areas
- Careless diver tourism
EXPLORE (Provide Common Experience)
 Preliminary Activity  Pictures of
 Precautionary measures different
 Introduce the activity: “Behind The Scenes” destructions on
 Activity Proper ecosystems
 Organize two (2) groups and provide each group  Activity Sheet
with materials.
 Each group must have to arrange the pictures to
their proper headings.
 Activity sheet will be provided for each group.
 Follow direction in the activity sheet.
 Be aware of the time allotment for this activity.
 Rubrics in Group Activity
EXPLAIN (Post-activity)
(Group reporting and the teacher checks their output  Rubrics for
right away) checking of
 Each group will have a representative to present and group outputs
explain their output.

Guide Questions:
 How did you find the activity?
 Did you learn something from the activity?
 Are you doing these unfavorable activities?
 If you continue doing these, what are the
possible tragic effects to mankind of destroying
the rainforest, coral reefs and mangrove swamps
ecosystems?
ELABORATE (Applying and Making Use of Information)
 The results of the activity.  PowerPoint
 Complete the statement below. Write your answer in slides
your science journal.
I have learned that…
Tropical rainforests, coral reefs and mangrove swamps
are some examples of ______________. Hence, they
should be protected and conserved. There are some
ways to protect and conserve our ecosystem like habitat
restoration, ______________, ______________,
_______________ , ____________ and wildlife
conservation.
 Why should we stop destroying our ecosystems?
 Why do we need to preserve these forms of
ecosystems?
 Write PC if the following statement shows protecting
and conserving tropical rainforest, coral reefs and
mangrove swamps and write N if not.
_________1. Replanting trees in the forest.
_________2. Striking or touching a coral reef.
_________3. Helping organizations dedicated in
protecting and conserving natural resources.
_________4. Participating in local coastal cleanups.
_________9. Recycling and disposing trash properly.
