    8  COMMUNICATION WORKSHEET Conversation fillers

    Student A

    1 START You’re a teacher and your student’s English homework was full of mistakes. You need to:
    • Tell the student what the problem is.
    • Ask the student why it happened.

    2 RESPOND You’re a student on a bus after a tiring and stressful school day. Listen to the request:
    • Ask why they want your seat.
    • Say politely why you don’t want to move.

    3 START You made a jumper for your grandchild. You’re disappointed because they never wear it.
    • Ask if it’s too small or big.
    • Ask whether they really like it.

    4 RESPOND Your job interview starts in 15 minutes. You need to buy a pen to write down notes. Listen,
    then:
    • Tell the shop assistant why it’s so urgent.
    • Ask if they can help you in any way.

    5 START You were taking part in an online lesson when your sister started being very noisy. You:
    • Ask your sister to be quiet or leave.
    • Say why your lesson is more important.

    6 RESPOND A babysitter is looking after your son, when you receive a phone call. Listen, then:
    • Ask exactly how it happened.
    • Say why you think the babysitter should pay.

    Student B

    1 RESPOND Your teacher is going to talk to you about your homework. You need to listen, then:
    • Say what you found difficult.
    • Explain why you were having problems.

    2 START You’ve been on your feet all day. There aren’t any seats on the bus. You go to a student:
    • Ask if they can give you a seat.
    • Explain what you were doing all day.

    3 RESPOND You got a horrible handmade jumper as a birthday gift from your grandparents. Listen, then:
    • Answer the questions politely.
    • Explain why it doesn’t really suit you.

    4 START You’re serving customers at the checkout with a long queue. A customer is trying to push in:
    • Ask the customer whether they need help.
    • Tell the customer politely to go to the back.

    5 RESPOND You’re playing the drums because you’ve got a concert tomorrow. Listen to your sister:
    • Say what you are doing and why.
    • Ask them to go to another room instead.

    6 START You’re babysitting. While the boy was playing football inside, he broke a window. Call his parents:
    • Tell them about the accident.
    • Say why you don’t think you should pay for the window.
