Let’s Review!

What is a Sentence?

Sentence is a group of words that has a complete thought. It is made up of

subject and predicate.

What are the different Sentence Structures?

1. Simple Sentence- It contains a subject and a verb, and it may also

have an object and modifiers, but it has only one independent clause
(an independent clause contains a subject and verb and expresses a
complete thought), and NO dependent clause.

2. Compound Sentence- It contains two or more independent clauses.

These two independent clauses can be combined using a comma (,)
and coordinating conjunctions (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so), or with
a semicolon (;).

3. Complex Sentence- It contains at least one independent clause and

at least one dependent clause. The dependent clause is otherwise
known as subordinate clause that is connected by subordinating
conjunctions such as although, since, because, when, whenever, as,
who, which, that, before, after, even if, so that, if, now that, unless,
until, while, etc.

4. Compound-Complex Sentence- It contains at least two

independent clauses and at least one dependent clause.

D. Discussing New Clause

Concepts A clause is a group of related words that contains at least a subject
and Practicing New and a verb. It may have complete or incomplete thought.
Skills #1
Phrase VS Clause

It is often confusing to other people the difference between phrase and

clause. Look at these
Examples:

CLAUSE PHRASE
The man under the tree likes to Under the tree
dance.
Group of related words – No
Group of related words. – Yes
Subject – none
Subject – The man Verb - none
Verb – Likes to dance

It can be distinguished from a phrase, which is a group of related

words with no subject and verb relationship.

There are two types of clauses.

1. Independent Clause
It is also considered as a simple sentence. An independent clause has a
subject and a verb and expresses a complete thought. It can stand alone
because it doesn't depend on other elements of the sentence to complete the
thought.

Let’s look at these examples:

A. I enjoy walking around Intramuros.

B. Shiela usually wears face mask.

These examples contain subject and verb. They also have a complete
thought.
2. Dependent Clause

It is also called a subordinate clause which means that it is subordinate to

another part of the sentence (independent clause). It usually begins with
subordinating conjunctions such as: despite, after, although, as, as if, only
because, before, how, if, since, than, though, unless, until, when, whenever,
where and while that make the thought not complete.
Let’s try these examples:

1. When my teacher tells me

2. If I stay at home

E. Discussing New How do we identify the dependent and independent clauses in a complex
Concepts sentence?
and Practicing New
Skills #2 Let’s try this example:

1. Because I need to go home before 12 midnight, I left my glass shoe

at the party.

Which of them is the dependent and independent clause?

IC: I left my glass shoe at the party.

DC: Because I need to go home before 12 midnight.

You can use the subordinating conjunctions as your markers to determine

the dependent clause.

2. Despite facing numerous challenges, he bravely ventured into the

ocean to find his way back home to his father.

3. My nose grows in length whenever I tell a lie.

F. Developing Your Turn!
