TALISE TOOPPEH's backstory

Talise is the daughter of an Indian mother and a colonist father, what most people would call a
mestizo. Talise spent her early years learning about the ways within the tribe [Shoshone, Western
Plateau, Idaho] in the ways of the tribe: language, ways, tracking, herb lore, poultices, survival...

Although the most interesting part was every few days, when the tribe shaman met us overnight, a
bit far but not much from the fire pit. He used to talk about one tribe Spirit in particular over the rest,
Coyote, which was a trickster to many but a teacher to pierce deception, even the mankind maker, as
the distractions of Coyote to the Earthmaker created the diversity of nowadays (too white, too soft..).

After my first years in the tribe, my father came to take me to the big city, Phoenix, as my mother
passed away. It wasn't an easy change, 'a trial from Coyote', I though to ease this change. I learnt the
way of the white man, their culture, history, language, reading and writing and more. I was still
missing my early years at the tribe.

A few years after, my father passed away and I aimed to go back to the tribe. It seemed that the
shaman didn't age, and I asked to be under his tutelage, to learn from him, from Coyote, from the
tribe..

So many years of intensive and exhausting training, long nights enduring the night temperature, the
tempting trials that my mentor made me endure, the attempts to see what was under the water
surface in the lake at night **- "Determination, pierce the veil, it's not the real moon, just its reflection,
a mirage!" -** and I had to put all my will to do so, as when I had to barewalk over hot embers without
running away... These trials, and the torturing vision of my deceased mother, made me who I am
today, as after I passed the last of them, my initiation was completed, and my Sire, my Spiritual
Guide, tattooed a mark on me, a tattoo of Coyote in my shoulder blade. A few nights later, when it
was fully healed, I received 'the bite', becoming part of the family and clan Ravnos.

I took my horse and left my tribe with an aim in my mind (recollect all information I can about the
animals and plants of the region) and an oath in my heart (to not harm any native American tribal
women, as hard-working they are and as to honour my mother), my first steps to achieve my
Svadharma.

My aim now is to increase my wisdom, learning more about the civilization and make the best of it,
piercing through the illusion of progress and make a long lasting contribution to share this wisdom,
even if that means an innocent trick that could be misunderstood, like it happened to me not long
ago in Florence (Oregon), as I tried to play a piano in a local saloon and I did it so badly that I lost
interest on it straight away, but the bartender was mad at me because that made him loose some
customers.

I went outside, took my horse, and ride for a few miles, I needed to be sure I wasn't chased for it. As
the night was getting to an end, I looked up for a nearby cave to sleep and I found one. I hide well in
to avoid the day sunlight.

Not long after sunset, my horse whined and, all of the sudden. An old man, with tattered denim
dungarees, squared printed shirt, a gold panning basin in one hand and a mining pick in the other
appeared, from nowhere, in front of me.

He asked me if I was here to steal from him, he didn't attack me but his angry face was showing the
tip of his fangs. I explained him that I was not, that I was just spending the night. The conversation
shifted from one topic to another, I throwed a couple of lines to check if he was a vampire too and
he was. I asked him if he could please teach me how he did the appearance - I was thinking to me
that it would be brilliant if I ever have any other issues and none understands the way of the Coyote.
He agreed requesting a favor to help him find a new cave nearby another river bank - As the one he
was prospecting was dry -, where he could keep looking for more gold nuggets. I agreed and after a
few weeks of tracking, I helped him to move his belongings there. Surely his mind wasn't totally right,
neither that I learn that showing up power, but he taught me the basics, the foundation of Obfuscate
and how to blend in with the shadows standing still.

I hope I can even out the lost that the bartender had anytime soon and, by then, the owner may learn
that the Nuwi-Yininii (illusion of life, Maya), the line between gaining and loosing - customers on this
case - is very thin and it can seriously affect his To-edg-pe-nun-ko-nai (long time in the future
personal goal, Svadharma), his goal and purpose.
