Georg Philipp Telemann published three sets of Fantaisies pour le clauessin (Fantasias for the Harpsichord), each containing a dozen pieces.
Like
i. 5. Bach's Ira lian Concerto and' French Ouerture, written around the same time, these pieces were designed to illustrate the differences between
the fashionable French and Italian styles of the day, This piece is taken from the first dozen, which is \Anitten in the Italian style, as is
the third
dozen. The second dozen is written in the French style.
This Vivace is in Italian concerto style, The opening theme (bars 1-B), which recurs later in the dominant D minor (bar 26) and in an abridged
form at the end (bar 50), has the character of a ritornello, or recurring theme. The intervening phrases (bars B-2s and 39-48), on the other hand,
are full of the rapid passage-work characteristic of solo sections. A few echo dynamics have been suggested, but otherwise dynamics are left to
the player's discretion. The cross (+) is a standard l8th-century sign for a trill.
