1. PURPOSE
The purpose of this Method Statement is to outline the procedure and sequence for
execution of tile works. This shall include the preparatory works, application and finishing
works in accordance with the Project Specifications, contract drawings, approved shop
drawings, project standards, manufacturer technical data sheet and manufacturer method

statement.

2. SCOPE
This Method Statement shall detail the materials, procedure and sequence of tiling ans
associated works and includes the storage of material, preparatory works, installation of
accessories, materials and manpower allocations and responsibilities, finishing and curing
works.
This method statement shall be read in conjunction with documents as listed in references
and similar alternate submittals submitted in due course.

5. RESPONSIBILITIES
a) The Project Manager shall be responsible for overall implementation of tili fixing works
as per safe and approved methodology.
b) The Construction Manager is responsible for the overall coordination of works on site.
He shall organize his team for the proper implementation of the tiling activities and
shall support his team in terms of resources and guidance.

c) The Project Engineer is reposnible to supervise if the work is being carried out as per
approved drawings. He shall ensure that all requried permits are available for the
works.
d) The Site Engineer is responsible for the site execution to ensure the correct and
environmental safe work method is followed by all persons and sub-contractor
e) The QA/QC engineer shall be responsible for ensuring the quality of work as per
specifications and agreed Methodology. He shall ensure project quality requriements
are complied.
f) Safety Engineer shall be responsible to ensure the safety of workers during the
progress of work. He shall ensure that safety precautions are in place and that all
personal on site are using the required Personal Protective Equipments like Helmet,
Gloves, Safety Shoes, Coveralls.

8. LOGISTICS
A. Access / Egress
a) Material shall be offloaded to Stores/designated areas. Accessories shall be offloaded
at store.
b) Proper barricades and barrier shall be positioned along the access way to ensure
safety of equipment, laborer’s and material. Access shall be limited during peak hours
of activity, as and when required.
c) Dust control shall be managed by watering twice a day or every peak hours,
whichever is more applicable

B. Traffic Management
j) Refer to updated logistics plan to determine the suitable access. Any change to this
access roads are provided with directional signs.
k) UNEC will provide traffic aides/ flagmen around the site as required to ensure that
flow of traffic is controlled.
l) All workers and operators shall be inducted on the HSE rules and regulation of the
project. E.g. speed limit, HSE regular equipment inspection, PPE, etc.

9. HEALTH AND SAFETY


All the safety measures are covered separately in the project HSE plan. However, a
specific Risk Assessment (RA) is attached to this submittal to cover all identified risks of
this activity
A. Risk and Control
a) Toolbox meeting will be held prior to start of activity to discuss the RA. Proof of
attendance shall be retained for record purposes.
b) Work permit system shall be used to record specific/ special instruction by HSE team
c) Carrying material shall be explained to workers to avoid any injury. Proper equipments
like wheel barrow etc shall be provided for minute transportation of material sacks/bags
etc.
d) Proper scaffold shall be erected for workers to conduct high level Tile Fixing. All
workers shall be trained for working at height while handling tiles. Scaffold and platform
shall be sufficient enough to carry loads of workers and materials.

B. Emergency Arrangements
a) First Aider shall be advised to be on stand-by for any emergencies.
b) All emergency contact numbers are posted around the vicinity and are discussed
during site safety meeting
c) The work area will be maintained neat and tidy, as reasonably practicable, at all
times.
d) All Safety aspects will be continuously monitored by Safety Engineer and his team.
Any necessary corrective actions will be carried out immediately as and when
required

10. PRIOR ACTIVITIES


a) Ensure all permissions and consents are obtained from all discipline consultants i.e.
MEP, ARCH, ID, etc
b) Ensure the drawings and materials are approved. All construction activities shall be
carried out in accordance with the approved drawings & method statements,
Minimum Code B and Specification section 09300.
c) Provide temporary erosion and sedimentation control measure, where necessary.
d) Protect survey control points, existing structures, fences, previous work and existing
services from excavating equipment and vehicular traffic.
e) Co-ordination will be done with other Sub-Contractors operating in the same vicinity
to avoid conflict.
f) UNEC shall be responsible in cordoning off the area to avoid disturbance during or
after offloading of the material

Material handling:
a) All material handling shall be carried out as per approved Method Statement and
Specification ref 09300.
b) Material to be stored in manufacturer’s packaging and unopened till the usage
requirement in a stable stack with no direct contact from ground.
c) Material Inspection requests shall be made for all deliveries of all permanent materials
for Consultant’s verification against material approvals.
d) Accessories to be stored in dry place with no direct contact with sun or high
temperatures
e) Materials shall be clearly identified by type, strength and other dynamics to avoid any
confusion and distortion of materials.
f) Accessories when transferred to the site must be kept in boxes or placed on top of a
dry area or polythene sheet. All unused accessories must be returned to the store.

Mock-Up
a) All mock-ups shall be carried out as per approved Method Statement and Specification
ref 09300.
b) Mock-up shall be applied as per specification requirements at Consultant’s designated
location but preferably in units A001 and A002 and shall reflect the workmanship.

11. PROCEDURE / METHOD TO BE EMPLOYED


A. Sequence of Work
a) Starting time, sequence and the completion time will be according to the detailed
construction program
b) The Site Engineer will review the approved Wall Finishing Layout shop drawings, check
the Actual Site Condition and liaise with the MEP engineer for the handover of the
areas.
c) Ensure all concealed spaces / sealing of penetration and defects of plaster or previous
activity should be completed prior to the commencement of any tile fixing.

B. Preparation and Notes


a) Soak the tiles in water before fixing.
b) Backgrounds are secure, adequately true and level to achieve specified tolerances,
free from contamination and loose areas, and in a suitable condition to receive tiles.
c) All cutting, chasing, fixing of concealed conduits, service outlets, fixing pads and the
like and making good of the background, are completed. MEP clearances shall be
obtained.
d) Wall Plaster application will be completed, and mechanical key / rough surface will be
maintained prior to start tile works.
e) The surface shall be cleaned and free from dust, loose particles, oil and grease.
f) For wet area, water proofing (floor and wall) will be done, and water test will be carried
out and approved by consultant.
g) After completing the water test water will be removed and polythene sheet will be
laid, and protection cement sand bedding will be applied prior to tile works.
C. Materials and Shop Drawing
a) Material inspection requests shall be made for all deliveries of all permanent materials
for Consultant’s verification against material approvals.
b) Accessories when transferred to the site must be placed on top of a polythene sheet

and covered fully. All unused accessories must be returned to the store.
c) Only mix appropriate quantities required to complete the work for the day to minimize
wastage.
d) Any mix that has reached initial setting shall be disposed-off as per waste
management

D. Procedure for fixing wall tile


a) The wall to receive tiles shall be finished with plaster as per approved method
statement.
b) The plastering to wall surfaces will be fully cured and free from any contamination,
dust and cracks before commencing the wall tile.
c) The surveyor shall mark the finished floor level on the wall of the room.
d) The wooden plywood strip shall be fixed above 2 tiles high from FFL on the wall.
e) Tile setting out shall be done as per approved shop drawings.
f) Wall tile fixing shall start from the fixed wooden strip level.
g) Approved adhesive material shall be applied to the wall as continuous even float coat
and the wall tiles are fixed to the adhesive with twisting/sliding action to give the
finished bed thickness not more than 3mm.
h) Tile shall be correctly positioned in both directions by using plastic spacers to achieve
even joints (3mm, unless otherwise indicated on Drawings).
i) The tile shall be fixed in a way to get solid bedding and adhesion over the whole of
the tile background.
j) Excessive adhesive material shall be removed with damp cloth without disturbing tiles.
k) The cut tiles on the sides of sanitary fittings & fixings and at the corners & joints shall
be properly cut and laid in a neat manner using electric tile cutters.
l) The tile shall be extended into recesses and under or behind equipment and fixtures
to form a complete covering without interruptions.
m) The tile shall be 50mm extended above false ceiling level.
n) The tile termination works will be done neatly at obstructions, edges, and corners
without disrupting pattern or joint alignments.
o) The fixed tile shall be left for minimum of 24 hrs to cure and set.
p) Warning tapes and/or No access boards will be fixed upon completing tile fixing and
no other activities shall be allowed until the tiles firmly set.

Procedure for fixing Mosaic wall tile


(Assent wall for bathrooms)
a) The wall to receive mosaic shall be finished with plaster as per approved method
statement.
b) The plastering to wall surfaces will be fully cured and free from any contamination,
dust and cracks before commencing the wall tile.
c) Ensure the wall waterproofing completed as per approved method statement and shop
drawings.
d) The surveyor shall mark the finished floor level on the wall of the room.
e) The wooden plywood strip shall be fixed as per approved shop drawing level from FFL
on the accent wall.
f) Mosaic setting out shall be done as per approved shop drawings.
g) Mosaic fixing shall start from the fixed wooden strip level.

h) Approved adhesive material shall be applied to the wall as continuous even float coat
and the mosaic are fixed to the adhesive with twisting/sliding action to give the
finished bed thickness not more than 3mm.
i) Mosaic shall be correctly positioned in both directions to achieve even joints.
j) The mosaic shall be fixed in a way to get solid bedding and adhesion over the whole
of the tile background.
k) Excessive adhesive material shall be removed with damp cloth without disturbing tiles.
l) The cut mosaic on the sides of sanitary fittings & fixings and at the corners & joints
shall be properly cut and laid in a neat manner.
m) The mosaic shall be extended into recesses and under or behind equipment and
fixtures to form a complete covering without interruptions.
n) The mosaic termination works will be done neatly at obstructions, edges, and corners
without disrupting pattern or joint alignments.
o) The fixed mosaic shall be left for minimum of 24 hrs to cure and set.
p) Warning tapes and/or No access boards will be fixed upon completing tile fixing and
no other activities shall be allowed until the tiles firmly set.

Procedure for fixing floor tile (Dry area)


a) All surfaces to receive tile shall be structurally sound, clean, dry and free from oil and
all foreign matters.
b) Dry fix setting out shall be done as per approved drawings. Prior to start tile works
c) Surveyor shall mark the required level of bedding to the specified thickness and in
true alignment.
d) Cement sand bedding at a ratio of 1:3 shall be placed loosely, distributed and hand
compacted / tamped in uniform thickness to obtain floor level of tile floor indicated on
drawings. Cement Sand calculation to be as follows but can vary a little based on site
requirements and ambient temperature:
Calculate wet volume of application (Area x thickness) and multiply it by cofactor 1.25
to receive dry volume. Use the ratio to calculate Cement and Sand quantities.
e) Prepare cement slurry with cement and water to form a thick paste and spread it on
the levelled base mortar.
f) Wet the rear side of the tile with water. (Complete immersion of tile is not necessary
but thoroughly wet the rear side)
g) Tile shall be laid with a twisting motion ensuring good contact between tile and
Portland-cement based formulation bed.
h) Tile shall be correctly positioned in both direction by using plastic spacers 3mm,
(unless otherwise indicated on Drawings) to accommodate the difference between wall
and floor tile as per approved drawings.
i) The tile shall be neatly cut to a close fit where necessary such as at abutments, around
the outlets, pipes, and the like.
j) Localized variation in level for nominally flat floor shall be max of ±3mm, when tested
by 3 meters straight edge.
k) Excessive grout shall be removed with damp cloth before the material has set.
l) The fixed tile shall be left for minimum of 24 hrs to cure before grouting.
m) Warning tapes and/or No access boards to be fixed upon completing tile fixing and
no other activities shall be allowed until the tiles are firmly set.

Procedure for fixing floor tile (Wet area)
a) After completion/ approval of waterproofing system will be protected with polythene
sheet and cement sand bedding.
b) Additional care will be taken during the wet area cement sand bedding to avoid
damages to the waterproofing and heavy material and machines will not be placed.
c) Wall tile setting will be followed for the floor and shall be done as per approved
drawings. Prior to start tile works
d) Surveyor shall mark the required level of bedding to the specified thickness and in
true alignment.
n) Cement sand bedding at the ratio of 1:3 will be placed loosely, distributed and hand
compacted in uniform thickness to obtain floor level of tile floor indicated on drawings.
Cement Sand calculation to be as follows but can vary a little based on site
requirements and ambient temperature:

to receive dry volume.

h) Slope will be maintained as per approved shop drawing during the tile installation
towards to the floor / shower drain.
i) Particular care will be taken in wet areas to prevent low spots that may promote water
pooling the tolerance in the overall level shall not be more than 5mm from required
level.
j) Localized variation in level for nominally flat floor shall be max of ±3mm, when tested
by 3 meters straight edge.
k) Excessive grout shall be removed with damp cloth before the material has set.
l) The fixed tile shall be left for minimum of 24 hrs to cure before grouting.
m) Warning tapes and/or No access boards to be fixed upon completing tile fixing and
no other activities shall be allowed until the tiles are firmly set.

Tile grouting
a) The tile shall be left for minimum of 24 hrs to cure prior to start grout.
b) All spacers (2mm) shall be removed and ensure that there is no damage prior to start
grout.
c) Control joints to be provided at perimeters or at 5m each interval both directions with
5mm thickness or as per approved shop drawing.
d) The grouting mixing and application shall be followed as per manufacturer’s
recommendations.
e) Approved Grout Colour shall be applied.

f) The grout shall be applied full depth, width and level to the tile.
g) Warning tapes and/or No access boards to be fixed upon completing tile grouting and
no other activities shall be allowed until the grout firmly sets.

12. TRAINING
The safety induction shall be provided prior to start the work.
Training for executing the work is not mandatory, since trained operators and technicians
are deployed for this specific job

13. WORKING HOURS


Generally, Work is from 7:00- 17:00 excluding summer period, wherein UNEC shall adopt
a time scheme in accordance with DM rules and regulation.
No works shall continue beyond 20:00, unless, the necessary NOC has been received from
relevant authorities.

14. HOUSE KEEPING


The work area will be maintained neat and tidy as reasonably practicable as possible at
all times.
All Safety aspects will be continuously monitored by Safety Engineer and his team and
necessary corrective actions will be carried out immediately as and when required.

15. DISTRIBUTION

Ensure the sub floor is the level, clean and dry as possible and

MEP works completed as per the drawing Location 
Check and ensure tools and  correct material available at

location.
3  Check the Bowed wall may need straightening and patching
Ensure the Detailed measurements and layout as per Approved

Drawings
Check for color variation between the boxes of the tile and 
5
damaged tiles.
Check and ensure whether dry layout has been done  and 
6
identified the cut pieces location
Ensure that starting tile and trimming tile located as per 
7
indicated drawings
Check and provide the temporary batten to the wall to get your 
8
base level.
Ensure that wet area waterproofing has been done as per the 
9
approved shop drawing.

HSE Requirements

QA/QC Requirements
Check Ceramic tiles,glue,grout,shop drawings and method of Application

approved by Supervision Consultant
Check approved sample are available at site and materials delivered to 
2
site are as per the approved sample.
Ensure MEP works completed and clearance obtained from the 
3
concerned department. 
Verify Layout of tiling showing the position of cut tiles, pattern and 
4
spacing line approved by the Engineer
In wet areas check that approved Water proofing is completed as per 
5
Manufacturer's instruction and tested for leakage
Verify  the application of the mortar/Tile Glue has done as per the 
6
manufacture's recommendation.
7 Verify that spacing is uniform  between tiles.
Check that the tiles are installed as per drawing Pattern & the 
8 Manufacturer's instruction. (Ensure that the back of the Tiles receiving 
correct Adhesive coverage to prevent Hollow Tiles.)
Ensure Floor tiles laid level or enough falls in wet areas as may be 
9
required to prevent low spot and pooling of water. 
Verify the application of Tile Grout  has been completed as per the 
10
manufacture's recommendation.
11 Ensure that area has been protected from outside traffic.
