GRADE 12
CONTENT STANDARD:
The learners can demonstrate an understanding of:
 The origin and environment of formation of common minerals and rocks.
PERFORMANCE STANDARD:
The learners shall be able to:
 Make a plan that the community may use to conserve and protect its resources for
future generations.
COMPETENCY STANDARD:
I. OBJECTIVES:
At the end of one-hour lesson, the students should be able to:
 Identify common rock-forming minerals using their physical and chemical
properties. S11ES-Ib-5
 Classify rocks into igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. 11ES-Ic-6
 Develop awareness on the importance of minerals around us.
(S11/12ES-Ia-9).
 Picked and labelled some minerals or rocks from their surrounding or
backyard and determine its characteristic.
II. SUBJECT MATTER
Title: ORIGIN AND STRUCTURE OF THE EARTH
a) Earth materials and processes: Minerals and rocks
b) References: Earth and Life Science/ MELCS
c) Materials:
Power point presentation, pictures of different rocks and minerals.
III. PROCEDURES:
A. Preparation
a.) Routinary Activities:
 Prayer
 Checking of Attendance
 Assignment
 Review
b.) Motivation
 The teacher will present an activity entitled “CURIOSITY BLUFF”.
Each student will give a question based on their number attendance
arrangement.
B. Presentation (Present lesson of the day)
The teacher will present the lesson of the day and post the days objectives.
The teacher should:
 Identify common rock-forming minerals using their physical and chemical
properties. S11ES-Ib-5.
 Classify rocks into igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. 11ES-Ic-6
 Develop awareness on the importance of rocks &minerals around us.
(S11/12ES-Ia-9).
 Picked and labelled some minerals or rocks from their surrounding or
backyard and determine its physical characteristic.
D. Activity 1: I need your importance.
Directions: Name the following pictures below. List down the usage of this object in
our daily activities. What do the objects presented below imply?

E. Analysis
 What are the different types of rocks? Give examples of it.
 What is the difference between rocks and minerals?
 How can rocks and minerals used in everyday lives?
 Why are coal, mineral oil and natural gas called fossil fuels?
F. Abstraction
 The teacher discusses the different types of rocks and their examples.
 The gave the difference of rocks from minerals?
 The teacher will gave the importance of this study in our daily living?
G. Application (Group Activity)
(Ding Ang Bato) A closer look of rocks and minerals.
Situation: As we all know, the Philippines is rich in rocks and minerals. Our ground
is super loaded with large and various kinds of it. Now being science students, how
can you describe their properties and characteristic using your own curiosity and
creativity?
Directions: Collect and labelled some minerals or rocks in your surrounding or
backyard and determine its physical characteristic. After that, give your own
interpretation on it. Draw this in a ½ illustration board.
H. Generalization
 What are the different types of rocks?
 How do rocks differ from minerals?
 Is short words, what do you think is the importance of understanding rocks
and minerals in our daily living?
IV. EVALUATION
Identification
Directions: Described what is asked on the following statement. Write the chosen letter on a
separate sheet of paper.
________1. This are called the building blocks of rocks.
________2. It is a solid mineral that have definite volume and rigid shape.
________3. These characteristics of rocks minerals have definite volume and rigid shape.
________4. This mineral can be flattened by pounding with a hammer.
________5. It is ability of minerals to be sliced by a knife.
________6. It is the ability of the materials to bent and return in the new position.
________7. This property describes the minerals reaction to stress.
________8.This form of rocks forms when magma (molten rock) cools and crystallizes,
either at volcanoes on the surface of the Earth or while the melted rock is still inside the crust
________9. This is formed on or near the Earth’s surface, in contrast to metamorphic and
igneous rocks, which are formed deep within the Earth.
_______10.This type of rock has undergone transformation by heat, pressure, or other natural
