2023 Season Preview
2023 Outlook
Coming off a fifth consecutive playoff berth, the Riverhounds look to improve on their finish of a
season ago, when they placed fifth in the USL Championship Eastern Conference and advanced to the
Conference Semifinals before being eliminated in a shootout by eventual Eastern Conference champion
Louisville City FC.
Kenardo Forbes, the team’s captain and a Second Team All-USL Championship player a year ago, is at the
center of a team with experience at all levels up the field, including goalkeeper Jahamali Waite, defender
Arturo Ordóñez, midfielder Robbie Mertz and forward Albert Dikwa, all of whom started the majority of the
team’s games except Mertz, a midseason acquisition returning to the club.
That experience will be valuable for a Hounds roster younger than it was a season ago — 17 of 24 players
were age 25 or younger entering the preseason — though defender Joe Farrell and midfielder Junior Etou
both add veteran experience for a club with high expectations.
Positional Breakdown
GOALKEEPERS
After 2022 began with uncertainty at the position, Jahmali Waite established himself as the team’s first-choice
goalkeeper and earned his first appearance for Jamaica during the offseason. Stepping in behind Waite are two
first-year pros, Christian Garner and Jonathan Gomes, and the trio will learn under new position coach Jon Busch.
Returners: Jahmali Waite
Newcomers: Christian Garner, Jonathan Gomes
Departures: Kevin Silva, Chase Vosvick
DEFENDERS
Arturo Ordóñez and Nate Dossantos were regular starters a year ago, as was Dani Rovira, but in a midfield/defense
utility role, while Luke Biasi earned solid minutes a a rookie. Filling the center back role(s) beside Ordóñez could
be done by any of the new additions, with Joe Farrell the most experienced of the group, Pat Hogan joining from
Charleston, and Mike DeShields, Illal Osumanu and Trevor Zwetsloot all arriving with pro experience.
Returners: Luke Biasi, Nate Dossantos, Arturo Ordóñez, Dani Rovira
Newcomers: Michael DeShields, Joe Farrell, Pat Hogan, Illal Osumanu, Trevor Zwetsloot
Departures: Jelani Peters, Toby Sims, Shane Wiedt, Jesse Williams, Mekeil Williams
MIDFIELDERS
The midfield isn’t lacking for players comfortable distrubuting the ball. Kenardo Forbes and Robbie Mertz are
both coming off seasons in the league’s top five for assists, and steady-passing Marc Ybarra enters his second
pro season. The return of Danny Griffin in May, combined with newcomer Junior Etou, gives the team proven ball
winners in the center of the park, while Burke Fahling and DZ Harmon both are solid two-way wing players.
Returners: Kenardo Forbes, Danny Griffin, Robbie Mertz, Marc Ybarra
Newcomers: Anders Bordoy, Junior Etou, Burke Fahling, DZ Harmon
Departures: Luis Argudo, Danny Griffin, Angelo Kelly
FORWARDS
The hardest hit group by departures, the forward line still has Albert Dikwa to spearhead the charge after his
career-best 11 goal season. Edward Kizza, the team’s playoff hero in Birmingham as a loanee, is now with the team
on a permanent basis. Providing depth to the attack are two first-year pros out of college, Langston Blackstock and
Tola Showunmi, in addition to Tony Lopez, a standout in NISA last season who has experience playing overseas.
Returners: Albert Dikwa, Edward Kizza
Newcomers: Langston Blackstock, Tony Lopez, Tola Showunmi
Departures: Wyatt Borso, Russell Cicerone, Alex Dixon, William Eyang, Dane Kelly

Assistant Coaches
Prior to arriving in Pittsburgh, Visser served as an assistant coach at the United States Naval
Academy in 2015. The Midshipmen finished that season with an 8-9-1 record.
From 2013-14, Visser was head coach at Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy, Mass., where the
Lions made a two-win improvement in his second year over the first.
Visser began his coaching career at the NCAA Division III level, serving as an assistant coach and
recruiting coordinator at Eastern University in St. Davids, Pa. During his two years at Eastern, the
Eagles compiled a 21-11-2 record and had 11 student-athletes earn All-Conference honors.
The West Chester, Pa. native played collegiately as a midfielder at Messiah College for
four seasons before graduating in 2008. During this period, the team won three national
championships and accumulated an 89-6-2 record. The two-time team captain also received
Regional All-America honors in 2007.
A 21-year professional as a player, Busch’s most recent pro coaching position was Director of
Goalkeeping for Scottish Premiership club Hibernian during the 2021-22 season. He also spent
time coaching with Indy Eleven, where he wound down his career in a player/coach role.
Prior to coaching, his lengthy playing career began in the A-League — the predecessor to the USL
Championship — before spending 14 seasons with three clubs in Major League Soccer. He played
for Bob Lilley for one season with the Hershey Wildcats in 2001, and he was named A-League
Goalkeeper of the Year while helping the team reach the league final that season. That helped
propel him to MLS with the Columbus Crew from, where he played from 2002-06.
After the Crew, he joined the Chicago Fire. His 2008 season in Chicago was arguably his best, as
he played every minute for the Fire and was named MLS Goalkeeper of the Year after leading the
league in save percentage (.782) and tying for the lead in shutouts with 10.
His playing career continued with the San Jose Earthquakes from 2010-14 and one more season
in 2015 with the Fire before joining Indy Eleven In total, Busch played 309 matches in MLS and
recorded 83 shutouts, still the sixth-most in the league’s history.

2022 Review
Kelly started the year hot, scoring his 100th goal in the Coach Bob Lilley has
won more games than
league in the season opener, but it was Cicerone who any coach in Hounds
ended up pacing the team’s scorers for a second straight history with a record of
year with 13 goals and six assists. Albert Dikwa, coming off 83-36-44.
a season-ending injury in 2021, returned to post the best
season of his career with 11 goals and four assists, while Forbes once again earned All-USL Second
Team honors after posting the first 10-assist season in his decorated career.
The team raced out to the best start in club history with a 4-0-1 start in league play, but up-and-
down results through May and June left the team near the middle of the table. The team came alive
with a stretch of six wins and one draw in July and early August, during which first-year goalkeeper
Jahmali Waite cemented himself as the team’s No. 1. Waite, who burst onto the scene with a five-
save performance in a 2-0 extra time loss to FC Cincinnati of MLS in the U.S. Open Cup, ended his
rookie year allowing 21 goals in 21 league games and posting seven clean sheets.
July also saw the Hounds gear up for a postseason push, bringing back hometown hero Robbie
Mertz via transfer and adding former Pitt striker and first-round MLS draft pick Edward Kizza on loan
from the New England Revolution.
Though the Hounds lost only twice in their final 10 games, too many draws led to the team missing
out on a home playoff match, and they went on the road to Birmingham Legion FC for the Eastern
Conference Quarterfinals. The match was an instant classic in both Hounds and USL lore, as Kizza
scored tying goals late in regulation and extra time to force a shootout won by the Hounds on the
10th kick, 8-7. Louisville City FC awaited in the Eastern Conference Semifinals, but there the team
was on the short end of a comeback — Cicerone put the Hounds ahead with a pair of goals, but the
home team fought back to force a shootout in which they never missed, advancing 5-3.

Riverhounds Hall of Fame
CLASS OF 2022
Gene Klein
Gene Klein (second from left)
was joined by fellow Hall of
Famers John Kowalski, Justin
Evans and David Flavius for his
induction last year.
Gene Klein, a former Hounds coach, general manager, and television broadcaster, was the sole
member of the Pittsburgh Riverhounds Hall of Fame class of 2022.
Beginning with the Hounds’ founding in 1999, Klein served as an assistant coach under John
Kowalski. In 2006, he was appointed head coach of the Hounds, a position he held through
2009. For the Hounds, Klein’s work both on and off the field was essential, as he oversaw the
reorganization of the front office while was serving as general manager in addition to his coaching
duties.
The Riverhounds Academy was co-founded by Klein, who also found a home for the squad at his
alma mater, Chartiers Valley High School. Klein also forged a partnership with English soccer club
Everton FC and introduced the “Everton Way” training methods to the club during the Academy’s
early years.
Klein continued to be a significant representative of the club after his time as a coach with the
Hounds. He reconnected in the broadcast booth with his longtime coaching partner, Paul Child, from
2014-19, offering analysis on telecasts to a new generation of Hounds supporters.
Previous inductees
Class of 2019
Justin Evans (player/head coach), David Flavius (player), Paul Heasley (founder/owner),
Dave Kasper (general manager), John Kowalski (head coach)
