Executive Summary

Banana Carms is a student-run business in a stall. Banana Carms will sell Filipino’s favorite

snack, Caramelized Bananas or banana cue. Our small business will provide a nutritious and

delicious but budget-friendly snack while serving nostalgia and fond hometown memories when

customers eat our Banana Carms with a twist. The Banana Carms will be pre-sliced into biteable

sizes instead of the traditional skewered banana.

The company encourages the practice of being eco-friendly for the benefit of both the

environment and customers. Research shows that BPA could be found in food-graded plastic and

could not withstand heat and as a result BPA could leach from the plastic into its content and

consequently to the body (Hananeh et al., 2021, 52). Thus, instead of the traditional plastic bag

to place a hot banana cue, Banana Co. will instead use a kraft tray with wooden forks provided

for easy handling and to lessen plastic waste.

Our target market is the population within Silliman University, specifically those on a budget

with their food consumption. Banana Carms wants to provide accessible food that is both easy on

the wallet and delicious without compromising the quality of the ingredients that go in the recipe.

The company plans to do this by sourcing our ingredients from local farmers and markets.

Banana Co.’s location is within the school grounds of Silliman University at Dumaguete, Negros

Oriental. We are placed at the Katipunan Hall Grounds at stall C6 table 2two. We plan to sell our

Banana Carms exclusively on school grounds on a small stall where we will display the freshly
made snack. The location is ideal for the convenience and accessibility of the students within the

school.

Vision

Banana Corps will be a shop that is run by students for students where a comfort food item is

served that is both nutritious and delectable that serves nostalgia and fond hometown memories.

Mission

● Provide snacks in a warm and friendly manner

● Snacks with quality ingredients at affordable prices

● An enjoyable and secure space for students

● A plastic-free experience for the sake of the planet

Goals and Objectives

Banana Corps aims to:

● Provide a delicious but nutritious snack to students

● Lessen single plastic use in their products

● Preserve traditional Filipino snacks through modernization

Introduction

With the constant modernization of society, new trends constantly come and go; one of the

aforementioned includes food. Food from other countries such as milk tea from Korea and iced

tea from the West have slowly integrated into the country’s food industry. Students nowadays

drink and eat food influenced by other cultures and because of its growing accessibility. In turn

to that, Banana Corps wants to retain traditional Filipino culture but with a twist and a little

modernization to catch up to trends.

Filipino people eat three meals a day with other desserts or merienda as they call it. Traditional

Filipino snacks are well-adversed among the masses in the Philippines, especially street foods for

their convenience and affordability and as a source of income (Buted & Ylagan, 2014). The

recipes do not hinder people from making merienda on a random afternoon. A very good

example of this would be a banana dipped into something sweet or savory. Nutella is something

sweet for the tooth while fermented fish is a savory snack in the afternoon.

One of the classic Filipino meriendas is the Banana Cues. A true Filipino delicacy made from

saba bananas caramelized with brown sugar and cooked until a perfect golden color. This snack

always welcomes newly dismissed students after a school day just right outside the school

grounds. But one downside of this snack is its trademark, the banana being skewered on a stick.

One wrong bite and the banana may fall into the ground. Thus, Banana Corps incorporates

modernization along with this problem by altering the presentation whilst retaining its traditional

recipe.
Banana Corps aims to preserve the company’s roots of culture and the Banana Carms is the

perfect traditional snack to deliver the company’s mission. Derived from the merienda “banana

cue,” the company wants to sell a snack that reflects Filipino culture while still being flexible to

altercations for modernization.

Description of the Product

Banana Carms are caramelized banana snacks cooked to a delicious amber color and sold at an

affordable price. It is made up of only three ingredients: bananas, sugar, and cinnamon. This

snack is a delicious twist to the Filipino traditional banana cues where whole bananas are fried

and served on a stick. Banana Carms are instead sliced and have an added sprinkle of cinnamon

for additional warmth and flavor.

After cooking, the Banana Carms are placed on a rectangular kraft-made container with bamboo

forks provided. Banana Corps emphasizes its mission to provide an enjoyable experience with its

snacks while not at the expense of the planet in the case of that as much as possible, plastic use

will be lessened or nonexistent.

Comparison of the Product with Its Competitors

The banana cue is a popular street food known for its affordable price and no Filipino childhood

is ever complete without the taste of fried caramelized bananas. Although the other stalls will be

selling food that is both trendy and modern, what sets this product apart is the fact that even

though it does not have the sweetness of chocolate chip cookies or the zestiness of freshly

squeezed lemon juice, it is healthy. Bananas are known for their great amount of potassium

which aids blood pressure levels and provides benefits for heart health. Research from the

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2022) showed that numerous people in our

generation suffer from cardiovascular diseases ranging from age 20 to older. The nutrients found

in Bananas assist in mitigating the causes of not only heart-related diseases but various health

problems as well. Aside from the health benefits, it is a vigorous and delightful snack that fulfills

a busy student’s heart and stomach. The amazing aroma of the snack will remind you of home

and will fill you with a great sense of nostalgia, along with the fact that an unexpected twist was

added to it while still retaining its affordable price. It is guaranteed to fill both the customer’s

belly, heart, and wallet with delight.

Location

Banana Carms is located at Silliman University Campus in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental at
the Katipunan Hall Grounds. Silliman University is one of the most prestigious schools in the
Philippines. The University is an ideal choice for students in search of the best of a laid-back
environment located within the progressive and safe University Town of Dumaguete. It is a
private university with a student population of more than 20,000+ students. As Silliman
University is a melting pot of cultures and religions, a traditional Banana Carms would be very
ideal. On the campus, together with the other stalls with different kinds of products, the store
selling Banana Carms will be a small stall with an open front from which the foods are
displayed. On the campus, together with the other stalls with different kinds of products.

Market Area

Banana Carms will be sold at Silliman University thus Hibbard Avenue will be the coverage

area. Banana Corps is a snack-focused company wherein students are the main target market.

The school is the perfect place to set up and sell the Banana Carms as it is school grounds

housing the student population within. The block consists of elementary school, junior high

school, senior high school, and the different college departments. With the entrepreneurship fair

being held in the quadrangle at the entrance street by the Silliman University portals, this is the

perfect location to set up because of the high student foot traffic during break, lunch, and

dismissal hours.
Target Customers

Since Banana Corps will start operations at Silliman University, then the target customers are the

University students, teachers, and workers in nearby offices or establishments specifically people

who want to budget their money and get their money’s worth. The company wants to promote

accessibility thus, Banana Carms are offered at a very affordable price.
