Chapter I

Background of the Study

This chapter includes the Background of the Study, Statement of the Problem, Significance of the Study

and the Scope and Delimitation.

Background of the Study

The mañana habit is synonym to the Filipino expression “Mamaya na” is just another term for

procrastination. Filipino have the tendency to procrastinate on their works and studies if they see something that

could distract them and the things that they need to do will be set aside. This applies to all sorts of things but it

can also affect your health.

Manana habit, is a habit where in people tend to delay certain things on a later date (Pepoa, 2010). Until

now mañana habit is still common among Filipinos and affects them in both positive and negative ways.

According to Pepoa (2010) the mañana habit can be also considered as the “procrastination virus” since

it has a lot of negative effects. This habit has made Filipinos become less productive and why they give outputs

late which prevents them from growing as human beings since it made Filipinos lazier, it cause them to achieve

less instead of achieving higher goal and it will lead them to miss a lot of opportunities. The mañana habit really

has a lot of negative effects to the Filipinos

Volcano ECIG claims that although Mañana habit has a lot of negative effects, it also has positive effects.

Since people tend to finish task late they are able to rest on that time. Mañana habit does not only have negative

effects but also positive effects.

Statement of the Problem

This research study aims to analyze the Good and Bad Effects of Mañana habit on the daily life of grade

11 Ict Am-B in Gateways Institute of Science and Technology Cogeo Branch.

1. What are the good effects of mañana habit to the students.

2. What are the reasons why the Grade 11 students of Ict Am B do mañana habit.

3. How this habit affects the daily life of the Grade 11 Ict Am-B.

4. Is there good effect of mañana habit to students of Grade 11 Ict Am-B.

5. Did the students of Grade 11 Ict Am-B on GIST tend to say “mamaya na”.

Review of Literature and Studies

This chapter includes the Local studies, Foreign studies, Local literature and Foreign literature.

Local Studies

(Ona, 2012) Based on the results about the academic procrastination between male and female college

students, majority of the respondents tend to delay academic responsibilities and tasks and their reason behind

doing it is the unpleasurable feeling it brings as they are in the process of doing it, so they would rather choose to

do something apart from it while its deadline is still far. Procrastinators who purposively manages time base on

his immediate/urgent/chosen activities, gets excited with all the pressure of cramming things at the last minute,

and does all of the work effectively.

(Pedero, 2002) Procrastination is the act or habit of postponing an activity or its completion to a future

time. It is also referred to as the mañana habit or the tomorrow trap. The net results of procrastination are wasted

time, missed opportunities, poor performance, low productivity, self-deprecation, low self-esteem and increased

stress. Procrastination is allowing low-priority tasks to get in the way of high-priority ones. It is letting things get

worse postponing a much needed medical check-up, not confronting your mate about relationship problems, or

leaving something that you have started unfinished.

(Bank of the Philippine Island 2011) Filipino families are not saving enough to achieve what Filipino

desire in life. Since 1997, our average saving rate has been declining from 19.19% of household income to the

most recent figure of 14.85% in 2009. The “Mamaya Na Habit" is when a person promise to save more for a

retirement or an education plan and yet surrender to lure of a “Midnight Sale” or when a person find it very easy

to develop spending habits today and yet labor to give up the unnecessary habits for the future and when we

compromise our long-term goals for gratification in the here and now we are practicing the "Mamaya Na Habit".

Foreign Study

(Knezevic, 2012) Procrastination is the disease that eats away the student productivity and in exam season

student facing an epidemic. An American study estimates that over 70% of students exhibit this behaviour.

Students are biologically and socially predisposed to put off until tomorrow what we should do today. Researchers

has also shown that evaluation of threat and fear of failure correspond with higher levels of procrastination.

(Arabit, 2013) Manana habit is something that Filipinos learned from the Spaniards. The word “Manana”

means tomorrow or specified future time also known as procrastination in plain English, “mamaya na” in Filipino.

Structured Procrastinator is when a person put off the things they needs to do for something they wants to do and

active procrastinator is the people who are motivated to get things at the last minute.

(Pepoa, 2010) The manana habit can be also considered as the “procrastination virus”. This habit made

people become lazier and less efficient in doing tasks. It is also one of the greatest reasons why they become less

productive and why they give outputs late. Since it made people lazier, it caused them to achieve less instead of

achieving higher goals and it leads to miss a lot of opportunities. The manana habit really has a lot of negative

effects to the Filipinos.

Foreign Literature

(Tracy, 2001) "Eating your Frog" refers to accomplishing the most important tasks during the day instead

of trying to accomplish everything on to do list. This is based on an old saying explaining that if a person eat a

live frog each morning as soon as they wake up, they can start the day knowing that the worst thing is over and

they can move on. This is a metaphor for finishing the most challenging, yet most impactful, tasks first. This book

shows the reader how to organize their days to accomplish critical tasks efficiently and effectively.

(Pychyl, 2013) Procrastination, in contrast to other forms of delay, is that voluntary and quite deliberate

turning away from an intended action even when people know they could act on our intention right now. There is

nothing preventing people from acting in a timely manner except our own reluctance to act. The conscious use of

strategies to overcome our reluctance to act is essential, because procrastination for many people is a habit. That

is, procrastination in habitual response to tasks or situations, and like all habits it is an internalized, non-conscious

process.

(Steel, 2011) There is so much confusion about procrastination that it is best to lay our subject bare on the

dissecting table and start immediately separating the dilly from the dally. Procrastinating is not just delaying,

though delay is an integral part of what you are doing. Procrastination comes from the Latin pro, which means

"forward, forth, or in favor of," and crastinus, which means "of tomorrow." But procrastination means so much

more than its literal meaning. Prudence, patience and prioritizing all have elements of delay, yet none means the

same as procrastination. Since its first appearance in the English language in the sixteenth century, procrastination

has identified not just any delay but an irrational one.

Local Literature

(Andres, 1981) The mañana habit or procrastination is an example of the indolence of the Filipino’s which

Rizal wrote about almost a hundred years ago. It is the disposition of starving off responsibility to another day,

the tendency to escape from duty and obligation as much as possible. The character Juan Tamad represents this

habit and the much abused phrased at “saka na lang”, a vivid illustration of it is when responsibility can no longer

be shaken off and the person is forced to start doing his work, there is a tendency to stop after sometime and

discontinue what he has begun. This is called “ningas cogon.” The essence of this attitude is to start something

which one will never finish. Particularly, it is the proneness to leave matters incomplete and unfinished

(Miranda, 2003) Much of Philippine history yields to an analysis assuming procrastination to be the

dominant way of life in this country. After more than three hundred years of Spanish rule, close to half some

would even say a full century of American primacy and now at least five decades of native administration,

Filipinos continue to bear with political regimes that do not serve them well, that are neither truly democratic nor

effectively nationalistic.

(Lee-Chua, 2010) Procrastination is so widespread in schools that the novelist Eliyahu Goldratt dubbed it

“student syndrome” in his book “Critical Chain.” Students who suffer from this syndrome delay doing a task until

right before deadline. They work on a paper just before it is due and, for lack of time, often resort to cutting and

pasting passages from other sources, without proper attribution. They cut classes to print out their papers and,

when something goes awry, blame the printer, the ink cartridge, even the dog.
