Case Study: Abstract Concepts

Samantha is a six-year-old girl. She is curious, creative, and loves to ask questions.
However, Samantha often struggles to understand abstract concepts, to make
sense of concepts that are not directly tangible and has difficulty understanding
how things work.

Abstract thinking allows people to think about complex relationships, recognize

patterns, solve problems, and utilize creativity.

(Du Preez, 2023)

Explain how each of the following two (2) Developmental Theories would theorise why
Samantha has a challenges with abstract concepts.

Structure your answer as follows:

 Definition of abstract thinking according to Piaget: (1)

 Why Samantha experiences challenges with abstract concepts according to
Piaget: (5)
 Definition of abstract thinking according to Vygotsky (1)
 Why Samantha experiences challenges with abstract concepts according to
Vygotsky: (5)

2.3 Read the following scenario and complete the task: [10]

Scenario: Understanding Human Development

You are part of B-EDS 111 study group. During your first study group session it
becomes apparent to you that some of your peers do not fully understand certain
Child Developmental Theories, and how these theories can be integrated to
develop a sound understanding of Human Development.

You take it upon yourself to prepare a short summary on an A3 poster, to explain

to your peers how you integrate Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory with
Vygotsky’s Sociocultural Theory. The aim of this overview is to show your
understanding of Human Development. You plan to present this poster to your
peers when you meet for your next study group session.

(Wilson,2023)

Use the drafted poster below to complete this task. Provide you answer by typing the
question number and your answer. The Chronosystem (2.3.1) is used as a model
answer.

Note to Student: Mark allocation will be applied as follows:

 Two (2) mark each for every system that is integrated correctly. [8]
 Two (2) marks for the accurate description of how these theories overlap
and strengthen one another. [2]
