POEM
Stanza 1

A stranger came this morning


Dressed all in black and grey
Put every sound into a bag
And carried them away

The whistling of the kettle


The turning of the lock
The purring of the kitten
The ticking of the clock

The popping of the toaster


The crunching of the flakes
When you spread the marmalade
The scraping noise it makes

The hissing of the frying pan


The ticking of the grill
The bubbling of the bathtub
As it starts to fill

The drumming of the raindrops


On the windowpane
When you do the washing-up
The gurgle of the drain

A stranger called this morning


He didn't leave his name
Left us only silence
Life will never be the same

What is the poem about?


The poem gives importance to some of the

sounds we hear everyday. In the poem, the

persona imagines a mysterious stranger one

day collecting all the sounds that fill our

lives and taking them away.


The Structure of the Poem

In pairs identify the structure of the poem in

terms of:
stanzas and verses
rhyme scheme
atmosphere of the poem
The poem is made up of:
7 stanzas each being a quatrain
The rhyme scheme is ABCB
There is a language pattern in the verses

where the noun is telling us its action

mysterious one and this is because the

speaker does not tell us anything about the

mysterious man

we have in the poem?


Auditory Imagery

This form of poetic imagery appeals to the

readers' sense of sound. This form of

imagery is typically complemented by the

use of Onomatopoeia in the poem.
