PASSIVE VOICE

A. Definition of Passive Voice

A passive voice is a type of a clause or sentence in which an action (through verb), or
an object of a sentence, is emphasized rather than its subject. Simply, the subject receives
the action of the verb. The emphasis or focus is on the action, while the subject is not known
or is less important.

B. Functions of The Passive Voice

The passive voice is used to show interest in the person or object that experiences an
action rather than the person or object that performs the action. In other words, the most
important thing or person becomes the subject of the sentence.
The passive voice is a grammatical construction (specifically, a "voice"). The noun or
noun phrase that would be the object of an active sentence (such as Our troops defeated the
enemy) appears as the subject of a sentence or clause in the passive voice (e.g. The enemy
was defeated by our troops).
Active: the subject does the action
Passive: the subject receives the action
Active sentences is when the subject of the sentence performs the action in the sentence,
